External & façade joints in Reraig, Highland
Our applicators work in Reraig on sealing brickwork movement joints, render, cladding and façade joints. Old sealant removed completely, joints prepared properly and every job guaranteed for a year.
- Movement joints filled with mortar instead of sealant
- Plants rooting in failed movement joints
- Cracked joints where brick meets render or frames
When it is not the sealant
Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
- Render that’s blown, hollow or coming away
- Adding movement joints to masonry that has none
If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.
Surfaces we seal
- Brickwork movement joints
- Façade panels
- Render & cladding joints
- Copings & trims

About our external mastic in Reraig
Getting the depth right is half the job. Closed-cell backing rod sets the depth and stops the sealant sticking to the back, so it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch. Common call-outs are for brick movement joints where the sealant has split and rigid filler in a joint that should flex, on façade panels, brickwork movement joints and joints between brick and frames.
Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.
The work is covered for a year after we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Your questions about external mastic in Reraig
Will you come out to Reraig?
Yes, Reraig is covered. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is external mastic in a coastal place like Reraig any different?
Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.
I’m a tenant. Can you help?
Of course. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.
How do I get a quote for external mastic in Reraig?
The cost depends on the size of the job, access and how much old sealant has to come out. Call for a quick quote.
Do you remove the old sealant?
Always. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, so we never do it.
Can you do several jobs on one visit?
Yes. Just list everything you need and you will get one quote.
When will the joints need doing again?
That depends on the wall, the weather and the movement. Signs to watch for are cracking, hardening and gaps at the edges.
Does someone need to be in?
Access is agreed with you when the job is booked. Indoors, that generally means someone at home.
What we’re called out for in Reraig
Weeds, moss and debris in a joint are a sign the sealant has gone. Roots and dirt hold water against the wall and speed up the damage.
These are the problems we’re asked about most:
- Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
- Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
- Damp patches traced to an open external joint
For an older house near a landmark such as Lochalsh Parish Church, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

Aftercare tips
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Make sure movement joints are not pointed over
- Tell anyone working on the walls about the movement joints
- Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
- Clear growth from the base of walls and joints
If you have more work done on the wall, such as new render, cladding or an opening, show the contractor the movement joints. They should be kept open and resealed, not filled.
Once a joint cannot move, the wall finds another way, generally as cracking in the brickwork or render nearby. Catch it early and you reduce the risk.
What we do, step by step
The work is kept neat and contained to the joints we are treating, so you can carry on as normal. Expect the work to take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building, and we explain the cure time before we leave. For a place like Reraig, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
- Failed sealant is removed back to clean, sound faces.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
- We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.
Preparing for the visit
- Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
- Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

DIY versus a professional finish
A DIY attempt doesn’t rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly.
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.
What affects the quote in Reraig
Your quote is based on your job. We take into account:
- Any working-time requirements on site
- How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
- How much there is to do
- How easy the joints are to reach
Rather than a set price list, we look at what your job involves: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. You will know the price before we begin.
Helping us quote
To make quoting easier, let us know:
- The address or postcode of the job
- A few pictures by email, if you can
- If someone has resealed it before
- If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints.

Reraig buildings and the weather
Reraig is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.
If you let a flat or house near Kyle of Lochalsh station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.
