How we quote for external mastic

For a quick quote, just ask. The main things that affect it are:

  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • The number of rooms or windows
  • The product the joint needs

Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Ask us for a quote and we will go through it with you.

What we need to know

What to tell us when you ask for a quote:

  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • A few pictures by email, if you can

We do not publish a price list, as no two jobs are quite the same. Instead, we give you a clear quote for your job. To get started, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

External mastic for homes and businesses in Plasterfield

On houses, flats and commercial buildings across Plasterfield, we reseal joints in brickwork, render, cladding and façade panels. The preparation is the same whatever the wall: clean, sound faces and a controlled depth. If you’re dealing with joints with sealant missing in places and damp patches traced to an open external joint, we can put it right.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Plasterfield as everywhere else we work.

Walls and rooflines in Plasterfield

Plasterfield is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. On the islands, wind and salt spray are hard on outside sealant.

Around Plasterfield, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Plasterfield is about 1 mile east of Stornoway, in Na h-Eileanan Siar. Plasterfield gets the same service as everywhere we cover: the old material taken out, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee. Our Na h-Eileanan Siar coverage runs to 87 places, and Plasterfield is one of them.

Our applicators cover all of HS1 and HS2 for external mastic. You’ll find streets such as Simons Road, Anderson Road and Moss Park, and we cover them all. Nearby, we also carry out external mastic in Sandwick (1 mile south), Steinis (1 mile north-east), Sanndabhaig (1 mile south-east), Stornoway (1 mile west) and Branahuie (1 mile east). Plasterfield is among the bigger towns we cover in Na h-Eileanan Siar. For island and remote addresses, the job takes a little more planning.

Plasterfield: your questions answered

Will you come out to Plasterfield?

Yes, Plasterfield is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Can you do external mastic in Plasterfield?

Yes, Plasterfield is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll give you a clear price.

How long does external mastic last?

That varies with the weather the wall faces, how much it moves and the sealant used. Sealant is a maintenance item, so check the joints once a year and renew it when it starts to fail.

Do you seal joints where cladding meets other materials?

Yes. The old joint is removed, both surfaces cleaned and primed where needed, and a flexible sealant applied. The colour is chosen to suit.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We’re ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. We’ve worked for hotels, offices and other businesses and we are fully insured.

What is a movement joint?

A vertical gap in a long brick wall is normally a movement joint. It lets the bricks expand without cracking, and it should be sealed with a flexible sealant.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before resealing.

Can I do it myself?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care helps the new joints last. Our advice:

  • Walk round the building once a year and look at the joints
  • Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
  • Have failed joints looked at early
  • Ask before painting over external sealant

Don’t let soil, plants or ivy build up against the new joints. Damp material against the sealant shortens its life.

An open movement joint lets rain into the wall every time it pours. Over time it can mean damp inside, stained render or frost-damaged brick, all bigger jobs than a reseal.

What we do, step by step

At the end, we look at the finished work together. The visit itself generally takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access, depending on how much there is to do. For a place like Plasterfield, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
  3. The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
  4. Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
  5. We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Move anything stored near the joints

Advice

What the job involves on each surface

Cladding and façade panels

If the façade has a specified sealant, that is what we use or an approved alternative. Tell us what the building has when you get in touch.

Concrete and blockwork

The face of concrete or block is often dusty, so cleaning and priming matter. We prime where the sealant needs it.

Signs you need external mastic in Plasterfield

Many joints fail because they were sealed too deep or with nothing behind them. Sealant bonded to three sides has nowhere to go and rips as the joint opens.

Common reasons people contact us include:

  • Joints with sealant missing in places
  • Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
  • Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels
  • Rigid filler in a joint that should flex

For an older house near a landmark such as Stornoway High Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

What sealant work can’t fix

It helps to know what we cannot do:

  • Render that’s blown, hollow or coming away
  • Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
  • Subsidence or other structural problems

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before you book.
