Why deal with it now?

A failed movement joint lets water into the wall. Resealing early keeps the job to the joint itself, instead of the wall and finishes around it. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

There are no prices on our website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

External mastic for homes and businesses in Kinlochard

A movement joint is only as good as its depth. Closed-cell backing rod sets the depth and stops the sealant sticking to the back, leaving it bonded to two faces so it can move with the wall. We’re often asked to deal with failed seals between different materials and failed sealant between panels on a façade, across façade panels, copings & trims and joints between brick and frames.

Older stone buildings need a sealant that suits the stone, not an acetoxy product that can mark or attack it. On newer homes, the movement joints and roofline trims are what need watching.

Kinlochard questions

Is Kinlochard within the area you cover?

Yes, Kinlochard is covered. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is external mastic in Kinlochard guaranteed?

All our work, in Kinlochard and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

What do you put in the joint?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice, and we’ll explain our choice.

How do you reach high-level joints?

It depends on the height and the site. Ground-floor joints are simple; for higher work, tell us about the building and we will confirm what’s needed.

Is there any odour?

Possibly a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures.

Can you seal joints between two different materials?

Yes. Materials like render, brick, metal and uPVC all move differently, so a flexible sealant is needed where they meet. We choose one that suits both surfaces.

Why is there a gap in my brick wall?

A movement joint is a planned break in the wall that absorbs expansion and shrinkage. It should be filled with flexible sealant, never mortar.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We are fully insured for domestic and commercial work.

What sealant work can’t fix

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Failed render or damaged cladding panels
  • Adding movement joints to masonry that has none
  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course

If you’re not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Façade panels
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Copings & trims
  • Render & cladding joints

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Kinlochard buildings and the weather

Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.

Do you need external mastic in Kinlochard?

A lot of failed joints come down to preparation: joint faces that were dusty or damp, unprimed where they needed it, or still carrying old sealant. The new sealant then lets go long before it should.

Common reasons people contact us include:

  • Movement joints filled with mortar instead of sealant
  • Gaps where render, brick and frames meet
  • Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
  • Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint

For jobs in and around Kinlochard, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

How to choose a mastic man

The process

Every visit runs the same way: we look at the joints together, protect the area around them, carry out the job and clear up. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Outside jobs in Kinlochard need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
  2. The old mastic and anything lodged in the joint is removed.
  3. The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
  4. Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
  5. A flexible exterior sealant is applied and tooled in a colour to suit the wall.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Mention any tricky access
