Common questions in Aberfoyle
Is Aberfoyle in your area for external mastic?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Aberfoyle is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing, and we will give you a clear quote.
Is external mastic in Aberfoyle guaranteed?
All our work, in Aberfoyle and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We are fully insured, and an ARBOMaster approved applicator.
Can you do several jobs on one visit?
Yes. Tell us about everything you’d like done.
How long does external mastic take?
That depends on the amount of work, but most jobs take a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. We will give you a better idea when we quote.
How do you reach high-level joints?
It depends on the building. We work on joints that can be reached safely. Tell us about the building and we’ll confirm what access is needed.
What is backing rod for?
That’s backing rod, a closed-cell foam. It keeps the sealant at the right depth and bonded to the sides only so it can flex with the joint.
Is it OK to seal over old sealant?
No, and we never do. It can look neat for a few weeks, but the new bead soon lifts. The old sealant has to come out completely.
What should I tell you?
A short description and the location. If we need more, we will ask.
External mastic in Aberfoyle
Where two different materials meet, such as brick and render or blockwork and metal, they move at different rates. A flexible exterior sealant takes up that movement where mortar or filler would crack. We work on joints between brick and frames, brickwork movement joints and façade panels, and common reasons people get in touch are gaps where render, brick and frames meet and leaking joints around cladding and façade panels.
External sealant needs dry surfaces, so outdoor work around Aberfoyle is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.
You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

When something else is needed
To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
- Subsidence or other structural problems
If you are not sure, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Should I try it myself first?
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.
What we’re called out for in Aberfoyle
If plants are growing out of a joint, the sealant has generally failed or was never there. Dirt and roots then trap moisture in the joint.
The problems people usually mention when they call are:
- Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
- Cracked joints where brick meets render or frames
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
Around Aberfoyle, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.
What your quote should include
- Which sealant they’ll use, and why
- Which colour the sealant will be
- What preparation is included
- Who does the work, and how experienced they are
Aberfoyle buildings and the weather
Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that.
If you live in an older home near St Mary's Church, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep.

How the job changes by surface
Render joints
Render is weaker at the surface than brick, so a low-modulus sealant is kinder to the joint edges. We prime where the product needs it.
Brickwork movement joints
Brick moves with heat and moisture, and grows a little over time. That movement goes into the joint, so its sealant has to stay flexible.
Keeping the joints in good condition
Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:
- Make sure movement joints aren’t pointed over
- Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
- Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
If you have more work done on the wall, such as new render, cladding or an opening, show the contractor the movement joints. They must stay as flexible joints, never rendered or pointed over.
Gaps, plants or missing sealant in a joint are worth getting looked at. Early work is quicker and leaves a better finish.
The process
All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so there’s nothing for you to buy. After a quick look at the joints together, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. Around Aberfoyle, distance and access matter more than parking. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.
- First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
- The old mastic and anything lodged in the joint is removed.
- We clean both faces of the joint and prime them where the product calls for it.
- Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
- The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.
Before we arrive
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
- Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
- Mention any parking rules near the property
