External mastic for Hound homes and businesses

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

About our external mastic in Hound

Joints in render and cladding are easy to overlook until a damp patch appears. We look over the joints, agree the ones to renew and reseal with a flexible, weatherproof product in a colour to suit. We work on concrete & block, façade panels and copings & trims, and common reasons people get in touch are movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant and joints where the bead has come unstuck.

Older homes in small places like Hound may be stone, brick or timber-framed, often with later extensions. Where one material meets another is where water normally gets in, and they need the right sealant at the right depth.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.

Leave it or put it right?

The longer a joint stays open, the more water the wall takes in. In cold weather, frost can damage wet brick and render near the open joint, so the damage spreads beyond the joint. Older cottages and farmhouses around Hound can have timber floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email for an honest opinion and a quote.

Different surfaces, different methods

Copings and trims

Joints in copings, parapets and trims are exposed to the worst of the weather. We reseal them with an exterior sealant suited to the material.

Cladding and façade panels

Panels heat up and cool down quickly, so the joints work hard every day. We choose the product to suit.

Your questions about external mastic in Hound

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Netley station?

Yes. We work for landlords and agents as well as homeowners, and several properties can be quoted together. You can phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with the details for a clear quote.

Does living near the coast affect external mastic in Hound?

Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. The right product, a clean joint and the right depth all help it cope.

Where do you work from?

Our base is Crawley. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Just list everything you need.

Is it OK to seal over old sealant?

No. We remove every bit of old sealant first, so the new sealant bonds properly.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status, and we are fully insured.

Will the new joint stand out?

We choose a sealant colour to suit the brick, stone or render so the joint blends in. There’s a wide choice of exterior colours.

How long should I leave it?

That depends on the sealant used, so please follow the time we give you.

Looking after it afterwards

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:

  • Wash walls gently around the sealant
  • Check the sealant is paintable before painting near it
  • Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
  • Keep movement joints as flexible joints, not mortar

Do not paint over the new sealant unless we’ve said the product is paintable. Many exterior sealants aren’t designed to be painted, and paint can crack as the joint moves.

A joint that has stopped moving pushes the movement elsewhere, often as cracks near the joint. Resealing it early helps prevent that.

What external mastic looks like in Hound

Hound is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Historic houses like Medieval Merchant's House (about 3.4 miles north-west) are a reminder that the area around Hound has older buildings as well as new. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.

For landlords with property near Netley station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside. If you look after a building such as The Hamble School, its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s. Homes close to Church of St Mary include some older properties, and the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

What sealant work can’t fix

It helps to know what we can’t do too:

  • Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What we seal

  • Concrete & block
  • Façade panels
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Copings & trims

What affects the quote in Hound

We do not publish a price list, because no two jobs are the same. The quote depends on:

  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • Whether the work is at height
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • How much there is to do

Rather than a set price list, we look at what your job involves: the amount of work, the old material and the access. The price is agreed before we begin.

Helping us quote

Photos by email are helpful but not essential. Try to tell us:

  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • Where the job is, and your postcode

Getting a quote is simple: let us know the job and the location, and roughly how big it is. A few pictures by email make the job easier to understand, and we’ll come back to you with a quote.

How it works

When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. Most jobs then take a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. Somewhere like Hound needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. Every bit of old sealant and any mortar or debris is cut out.
  3. Joint faces are cleaned back and primed if the sealant needs it.
  4. We fit closed-cell backing rod to control the depth.
  5. The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
