External mastic for homes and businesses in Hipley
Ground-floor and low-level joints are straightforward to reach. For joints higher up, give us some details of the building and we’ll confirm what’s needed to reach them safely. We work on façade panels, brickwork movement joints and render & cladding joints, and the jobs we see most are brick movement joints where the sealant has split and joints where the bead has come unstuck.
Somewhere as small as Hipley, homes and farm buildings often face open ground, where walls and rooflines take the weather head on. Gutter joints and wall joints there need a sealant that can flex and stay put.
You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please ring 0345 464 0079 or email us.

Different surfaces, different methods
Brickwork movement joints
Clay brickwork grows slightly over its life and moves with the weather. That movement goes into the joint, so the sealant in it must stay soft and stretchy.
Cladding and façade panels
Metal and composite panels move a lot with temperature, so the joint sealant has to cope with frequent movement. We choose the product to suit.

Your questions about external mastic in Hipley
Can you help a landlord with a rental near Portchester station?
Yes, we work for landlords and letting agents. Just phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and tell us about the property, and we’ll send you a clear quote.
Is Hipley in your area for external mastic?
Yes, Hipley is within the area we cover. Our work covers London and the South East. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with a few details of the job, and we’ll send you a clear quote.
When will the joints need doing again?
It depends on the exposure, the movement and the product. Treat it as a maintenance item and look at it yearly and reseal when it splits.
Can you do several jobs on one visit?
Yes. More than one area can go on one quote.
Which products do you use?
It depends on the joint: anti-fungal sanitary silicone in wet areas, and other sealants where joints move or face the weather. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.
Do the sealants smell?
Sometimes, a little. It fades as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes, for a year. If there’s a problem with our work in that time, tell us and we’ll put it right.
Will it make a mess?
We keep the work tidy. Nearby surfaces are protected, and we clear up when we are done.
Do you need external mastic in Hipley?
Buildings move more than people expect. Brickwork grows a little over the years, blockwork and concrete shrink, and all of it moves with heat and moisture. The sealant in the movement joints takes that strain.
Look out for any of the following:
- Water getting into walls through failed joints
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
- Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
- Failed seals between different materials
For landlords with property near Portchester station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

The process
There’s no need to move everything out, just the space around the work. Everything nearby is protected, and the job takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation in most cases. Somewhere like Hipley needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.
- First, the joints are inspected and the access agreed.
- We cut out the old mastic and rake out anything in the joint.
- Joint faces are cleaned back and primed if the sealant needs it.
- Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
- We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before
- Tell us if parking is tricky
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

Advice
External mastic in Hipley: local notes
The South East is one of the drier parts of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast.
In the older streets around Church of the Holy Trinity, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain. Schools such as Newtown Soberton Infant School are buildings too, and movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

Honest limits
We’d rather tell you now than do work that will not last, so here’s what sealant cannot put right:
- Cracking across the wall rather than at a joint
- Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
- Adding movement joints to masonry that has none
Not sure which it is? You can phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.
Surfaces we seal
- Copings & trims
- Render & cladding joints
- Façade panels
- Concrete & block
- Brickwork movement joints
- Joints between brick and frames
Can I do it myself?
If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We cut it out and start again, so just mention it when you contact us.
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
Keeping the joints in good condition
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Keep high-pressure jets off the joints
- Keep movement joints as flexible joints, not mortar
- Leave the joints unpainted unless we have said otherwise
- Check external joints each spring
Don’t paint over the new sealant unless we’ve said the product is paintable. Many exterior sealants are not designed to be painted and spoil the finish.
An open movement joint lets rain into the wall every time it pours. That can lead to damp patches, staining and frost damage, all bigger jobs than a reseal.
