Questions from Drumlemble
Will you come out to Drumlemble?
Yes, Drumlemble is covered. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is external mastic in a coastal place like Drumlemble any different?
Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.
What information do you need?
Just the basics: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. After that, simply send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Can a movement joint be filled with mortar?
No. A mortar-filled joint cannot move, so the movement cracks the wall elsewhere. It needs a flexible sealant over backing rod.
What does external mastic cost?
It depends on the job, so we quote each one individually. For a quick quote, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a short description of the job.
Where are you based?
Our base is Crawley. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.
How long does external mastic last?
It depends on the exposure, the movement and the product. Sealant is a maintenance item, so check the joints once a year and reseal when it splits.
Can new sealant go over the old?
No, it won’t last. It may look fine at first, but the new layer lifts away from the old one. The old sealant has to come out completely.
External mastic in Drumlemble, done properly
As ARBOMaster approved applicators, we choose exterior sealants to suit the joint and the surfaces. Porous or awkward surfaces are primed where the sealant needs it and we use one wherever it does. If you have plants rooting in failed movement joints and panel joints letting water in, we can help, whatever the surface.
Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Outside joints on exposed walls work hard.
You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How to look after the new joints
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Ask before painting over external sealant
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
- Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below
- Have failed joints looked at early
Look over the joints once a year, ideally after winter. Splits, gaps at the edges or plants in the joint are early warning signs.
Act while the splits are small. At that stage it’s a simple cut out and reseal.
Walls and rooflines in Drumlemble
Drumlemble is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for movement joints and outside wall joints to keep out.
Historic houses such as Tirfergus House, about 0.7 miles south, show how far back building around Drumlemble goes, and older homes nearby need a sealant that suits their walls.

The process
Once we are on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. After that, the work takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. For a place like Drumlemble, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- We inspect the joints and agree which need resealing and how they’ll be reached.
- Old sealant and any debris are cut and raked out.
- The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
- Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
- The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.
Preparing for the visit
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

When something else is needed
We will always be straight with you, so here’s what sealant can’t fix:
- Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
- Adding movement joints to masonry that has none
- Render that’s blown, hollow or coming away
Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.
Surfaces we seal
- Concrete & block
- Brickwork movement joints
- Render & cladding joints
- Joints between brick and frames
- Copings & trims
- Façade panels
Why deal with it now?
An open joint keeps letting water into the wall with every downpour. In cold weather, frost can damage wet brick and render near the open joint, so the problem grows beyond the joint itself. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting. If you’re unsure, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

What the job involves on each surface
Cladding and façade panels
Panels heat up and cool down quickly, so the joint sealant has to cope with frequent movement. The sealant is chosen with that in mind.
Copings and trims
A failed coping joint lets water into the top of the wall. Resealing them is a small job that protects a lot.
Can I do it myself?
What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

What else we do in Drumlemble
What we are called out for in Drumlemble
Sometimes a movement joint was filled with mortar or a rigid filler, often by someone who didn’t know what it was for. With the joint locked solid, the movement turns into cracks elsewhere in the wall.
If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
- Failed sealant between panels on a façade
- Sealant pulling away from one side of the joint
- Brick movement joints where the sealant has split
Around Drumlemble, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.
