Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Ventilate rooms so frames don’t stay wet inside
  • Walk round the house once a year and look at the joints
  • Repaint timber before it’s bare
  • Don’t paint over the silicone

Try not to touch the new joint while it cures, for as long as we advise. Keep jet washers away from the frames.

Leaks generally show up in wet, windy weather, but resealing works best in dry conditions. Dealing with it when you first notice a crack avoids chasing leaks through the wet months.

Window mastic in Shalstone, done properly

The mastic around a window or door seals the gap between the frame and the wall. Once that seal fails, wind and rain find the gap. The old mastic is removed and the joint resealed with a flexible exterior sealant. We work on patio & French doors, composite doors and uPVC windows, and the jobs we see most are damp patches on the reveal after heavy rain and white mastic on grey or black frames.

Around Shalstone, many homes face open ground, so their windows and doors take the full weather. That exposure dries out and cracks the mastic around frames and sills faster.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, call 0345 464 0079 or email us.

FAQs for Shalstone

Is window mastic in Shalstone guaranteed?

All our work, in Shalstone and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Will you come out to Shalstone?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

We can work for tenants, landlords or agents. Get your landlord’s agreement first.

Can you seal the gap between the frame and the plaster indoors?

Yes. Outside is the weather seal; inside closes the gap to the plaster. We do one or both.

Can you do several jobs on one visit?

Yes. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status and we’re fully insured too.

Will new mastic stop draughts?

Often, yes. Air often gets in between the frame and the wall, and sealing the inside and outside joints closes that path.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. Larger jobs can be planned room by room or area by area to suit the site.

When it is not the sealant

It helps to know what we can’t do too:

  • Damp problems in the wall away from the window
  • Broken hinges, locks or handles
  • Condensation trapped between the panes

If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Surfaces we seal

  • Composite doors
  • Aluminium frames
  • Window sills
  • Patio & French doors
  • Timber windows & doors
  • uPVC windows

Should I try it myself first?

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

Shalstone homes and the weather

Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast. With historic houses such as Stowe House (about 2 miles east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Shalstone as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that is traditional sand mastic.

In the older streets around Church of St Edward, the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall. Around Shalstone, as everywhere, window mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Why act early in Shalstone

Draughts and leaks do not always mean new windows. Where the frames are sound, new mastic usually deals with draughts and leaks at the edges. If we find failed glass units or worn seals, we will tell you. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Shalstone, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you’re unsure, phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Surface by surface

Window sills

Stone and concrete sills have their own joints, and the joint under the frame can let rain run behind. Those are sealed with a product suited to stone or concrete.

Aluminium frames

Bi-fold and sliding aluminium doors have long frame joints, and the threshold joint takes a lot of water. We prepare and reseal every joint, backing the deep ones.

How the visit works

When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a morning for a couple of windows and a door. In a small place like Shalstone, access is generally the main thing to plan. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.

  1. We check how each frame can be reached safely.
  2. Old, cracked mastic is removed completely.
  3. The surfaces are cleaned and left dry.
  4. Deep voids are backed, then the sealant is gunned in.
  5. The joint is shaped to shed water and the area tidied.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Move anything stored near the joints
