About our window mastic in Nerston

Around Nerston we seal all kinds of frames: from uPVC casements to timber and aluminium, along with patio doors, French doors and sills. Each gets a sealant chosen for the frame and the wall it meets. Typical jobs include old mastic that has gone black or come away and untidy mastic left by window fitters, on window sills, uPVC windows and composite doors.

Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. The sealant has to suit the stone, which rules out acetoxy silicones that can mark or attack it.

We stand behind the work with a 12-month guarantee.

What happens on the day

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point us to the joints and we will get on with it. The work itself takes anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are, including the tidy-up. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We check how each frame can be reached safely.
  2. Old, cracked mastic is removed completely, along with any loose debris.
  3. The surfaces are cleaned and left dry, and primed where the sealant calls for it.
  4. Backing rod fills deep voids and the sealant goes in on top.
  5. We tool the joint so water runs off, then clear up.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height

Looking after it afterwards

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Keep solvents and bleach off the sealant
  • Repaint timber before it’s bare
  • Look round the frames every year or so
  • Air rooms to keep condensation down around windows

Keep the new mastic undisturbed while it cures, for as long as we advise. Keep jet washers away from the frames.

Signs to watch for: cracks in the mastic, gaps you can see light through, damp on the reveal or mould around the inside of the frame. Any of these is worth a call.

Common problems we fix in Nerston

Frames are never completely still. Sun on a frame makes it expand, and it contracts again overnight, while the brick or render around it hardly moves. If the sealant cannot stretch, it splits.

Any of these means the joints need attention:

  • Untidy mastic left by window fitters
  • Old mastic that has gone black or come away
  • Draughts coming in around windows and doors
  • Water coming in at the bottom corners of a door

Schools such as St Andrew's and St Bride's High School are buildings too, and the mastic around its windows and doors needs looking after like any other building’s.

What your quote should include

  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • Are they insured?
  • Is VAT in the price?
  • Whether you can choose the colour

Our hiring checklist

Surface by surface

Composite doors

Front doors take the weather head on, and the top and bottom corners tend to fail first. We pay most attention there.

Window sills

Every drop off the glass ends up on the sill, so the joints at each end and underneath matter. Each is cleaned out and resealed.

Frames and glazing around Nerston

Nerston is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for the mastic around window and door frames to keep out. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, often pointed into the wall with traditional sand mastic.

Common questions in Nerston

Is Nerston in your area for window mastic?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Nerston is part of that. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

I let a flat near East Kilbride station. Can you help?

Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners, and several properties can be quoted together. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the address and what needs doing, and we will give you a clear price.

Do you have sealant for grey or black windows?

Yes, in most cases. Tell us the frame colour when you get in touch and we’ll use the nearest match.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We are approved under the ARBOMaster scheme, which is run for the Arbo sealant brand.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Nerston and the rest of South Lanarkshire.

Can I paint over the new sealant?

Most silicone can’t be painted. Let us know beforehand, and we will use a paintable product where it suits.

How long will my window job take?

The work takes a few hours for a handful of frames, longer for a whole house. Access and the amount of old mastic make the biggest difference.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Always. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, and it’s something we never do.

Can I do it myself?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

What sealant work can’t fix

Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:

  • Draughts through the window seals rather than the frame
  • Rotten timber, which needs a joiner first
  • A failed sealed unit that has misted up

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.
