Hogganfield questions
Is Hogganfield in your area for window mastic?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Hogganfield is part of that. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll give you a clear quote.
Is Hogganfield within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can tenants book the work?
Of course. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on where the joints are. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in.
Is there any odour?
Possibly a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures.
How much does window mastic cost in Hogganfield?
It depends on the job, so we quote each one individually. To get one, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing and where.
Can I do it myself?
It depends on the job. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs, while a short indoor joint may be within reach.
Can you do several jobs on one visit?
Yes. Tell us about everything you’d like done and we will quote it together.
How we handle window mastic in Hogganfield
The mastic around a window or door seals the gap between the frame and the wall. Once that seal fails, wind and rain find the gap. The old mastic is removed and the joint resealed with a flexible exterior sealant. If you’re dealing with gaps where the sill meets the wall and a bead that doesn’t match the frame, we can help, on timber windows & doors, window sills and patio & French doors alike.
In and around a place like Hogganfield, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain, so the mastic there works hard.
You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

DIY sealant or a professional job?
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.
Different surfaces, different methods
uPVC windows
Fitters’ mastic on plastic frames is sometimes thin and rushed. It comes out, deep gaps get backing rod and the joint is resealed.
Timber windows & doors
Soft or rotten wood cannot be sealed successfully. If we find rot, we will tell you before going ahead, as that’s a job for a joiner.
What affects the quote in Hogganfield
Jobs vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:
- Which sealant suits the joint
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
- The size of the job
- Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
Commercial jobs are quoted on the same basis as homes: the amount of work, how we reach it and what it needs, plus any working-time requirements on site. Call for a quick quote and we will go through it with you.
Helping us quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- Roughly how big the job is
- A few photos by email, if you can
- The address or postcode of the job
The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints.

What we cannot put right
Some problems need a builder, plumber or other trade rather than us:
- A door that needs adjusting, rehanging or new seals
- A frame that has rotted at the joint
- Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (that needs a new unit)
If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.
What we seal
- Composite doors
- Patio & French doors
- Window sills
- uPVC windows
- Timber windows & doors
- Aluminium frames
Looking after it afterwards
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Don’t aim a pressure washer at the joints
- Don’t paint over the silicone
- Avoid harsh chemicals near the mastic
- Wipe condensation off the frames
Keep sill grooves and drainage slots clear, so rain drains out rather than building up at the sealant.
Water trapped behind a failed joint can start rot in timber frames and sills. Rotten timber needs a joiner, not a sealant, so it pays to reseal before that happens.
What happens on the day
Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we don’t rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. In total, it generally takes most of a day for a typical house, less for a few frames. Outside jobs in Hogganfield need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors is not affected.
- First, we go round the frames with you and agree the list.
- We remove the old mastic and clean the frame edge and wall.
- Deep gaps get closed-cell backing rod to set the depth.
- The new sealant goes on in white, brown, anthracite grey, black or clear to suit.
- We tool each bead neatly and check every joint is closed.
Getting ready for the visit
- Mention any tricky access
- For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
- Keep children and pets away from the work area

Window mastic in Hogganfield: local notes
Glasgow’s tenements are largely red and blond sandstone, and sandstone is porous, so any sealant against it has to be one that will not stain or attack it. With historic houses such as Provand's Lordship (about 2.7 miles south-west) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Hogganfield as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older timber frames in brick or stone need a different approach from a modern uPVC window.
Rented homes near Robroyston station change hands often, and sound mastic around windows and doors keeps out the draughts and damp that tenants notice first.

When to call us in Hogganfield
Timber windows bring their own problems. Mastic painted over many times cracks with the paint, and the wood moves with damp as well as heat.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- Cracked sealant at the sill ends
- Untidy mastic left by window fitters
- Black, perished sealant on frames
- Sealant in the wrong colour for the frame
Historic houses such as Provand's Lordship, about 2.7 miles south-west, show how far back building around Hogganfield goes, and older homes nearby need a sealant that suits their walls.
