Your questions about window mastic in Gourdon
Is Gourdon in your area for window mastic?
Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Gourdon is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear quote.
Does the coastal weather in Gourdon affect outside sealant?
Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.
Will resealing my frames help with draughts?
Yes, where the draught is at the frame edge. We check where the draught is before we start.
Is it worth trying it myself?
Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.
Can you reach windows above the ground floor?
Yes, if safe access is possible. For high or awkward windows, we’ll tell you what access is needed.
Do you work for landlords and businesses?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting agents, businesses and hotels.
Can you match the sealant to my frames?
Yes. White, brown, anthracite grey, black and clear sealants are all available, so the joint suits the frame.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes. Commercial and hotel work is a large part of what we do, as well as homes. Working times can be discussed when we quote.
How we handle window mastic in Gourdon
Most frames have an outside joint and an inside one. The external joint is the weather seal; inside, the joint between frame and plaster stops draughts and tidies the reveal. Either or both can be done. We work on patio & French doors, uPVC windows and window sills, and common reasons people get in touch are white mastic on grey or black frames and gaps where the sill meets the wall.
Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. Those suit a traditional sand mastic or a neutral-cure sealant, not an acetoxy silicone that can attack some stone.
A 12-month guarantee comes as standard, so you’re not left on your own once the job is done.

Gourdon homes and the weather
Gourdon is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on the mastic around window and door frames, especially on the side facing the sea. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.
In and around Gourdon, as anywhere, good window mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. In the older streets around Old Parish Church And Churchyard, replacement windows fitted into old openings often leave uneven gaps that need backing and a flexible joint.

How to look after the new joints
Looking after new joints is easy:
- Don’t aim a pressure washer at the joints
- Walk round the house once a year and look at the joints
- Keep paint off silicone joints
- Wipe condensation off the frames
Try not to touch the new joint while it cures, following the cure time we give you. Don’t point a pressure washer at the joints.
Signs to watch for: cracks in the mastic, gaps you can see light through, damp on the reveal or mould around the inside of the frame. If you notice one, it’s time to get the joint looked at.

DIY sealant or a professional job?
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
What we do, step by step
A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, protect the area around them, carry out the job and clear up. It generally takes a few hours for a handful of frames, longer for a whole house. Outside jobs in Gourdon need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors is not affected.
- We check how each frame can be reached safely.
- Old, cracked mastic is removed completely.
- The surfaces are cleaned and left dry.
- Backing rod fills deep voids and the sealant goes in on top.
- The joint is shaped to shed water and the area tidied.
Before we arrive
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
- Move anything stored near the joints
- Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height

Water getting past a failed joint can damage the building, which is a bigger problem in a rented property. Keeping joints in good order is simple maintenance.
Surface by surface
Patio & French doors
Water at the foot of a door frame is not always the mastic: blocked drain slots, worn brush seals and threshold details can let water in too. We look for the cause first.
Aluminium frames
Aluminium needs a sealant that bonds to coated metal. We use a neutral-cure product.
What happens if it’s left?
Once mastic fails, rain can get between the frame and the wall. Over time that can mean damp patches, damaged plaster and rotting timber. A reseal is a much smaller job. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.
No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference.
