Trusted sand mastic in Throsk

DIY versus a professional finish

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, then guaranteed for a year.

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Sand mastic in Throsk

Sand mastic skins over fairly quickly, but it takes longer to harden fully. Traditional guidance is not to paint over it, so ask us before you decorate. Common call-outs are for cement or filler used on old window joints that has cracked and open joints round the window box, on tenement windows, stone surrounds and period & listed homes.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Throsk depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee.

When to call us in Throsk

Scraping and sanding before painting can loosen old mastic. It’s often found when windows are being prepared for paint.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Draughts and rain around sash boxes
  • Gaps round a timber door in stone or brick
  • Tired mastic found when preparing windows for paint
  • Gaps between timber frames and stone or brick

For landlords with property near Alloa station, any sash windows need sound mastic to keep draughts and rain out.

Before booking anyone

  • What guarantee comes with the work
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it
  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • Which colour the sealant will be

Throsk questions

Do you cover smaller places like Throsk?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

I let a flat near Alloa station. Can you help?

Yes, rental work is part of what we do. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us about the property, and we will give you a clear price.

Is consent needed for window work on a listed home?

Speak to your local planning authority before work starts. Like-for-like sand mastic is often the preferred finish but the decision is theirs.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

We are based in Crawley, West Sussex, and we work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Is there any odour?

That depends on the sealant. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little.

Will it make a mess?

Not at all. The area is protected while we work and cleaned up afterwards.

Can you match the sealant colour?

We’ll suggest a colour to suit the surroundings, from white and clear to greys and other shades. The product needed can limit the range.

What information do you need?

A short description and the location, with photos by email if possible. We will ask anything else we need to know.

What affects the quote in Throsk

We don’t publish a price list, because jobs vary so much. The quote depends on:

  • Access and height
  • The number and length of the joints
  • When we can work, for business premises
  • The type of sealant required

Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Please mention:

  • Roughly how big the job is
  • The address or postcode of the job
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • The problem you’ve noticed

It all starts with a short chat. Describe the problem, the location and the size of the job, and we’ll explain how we’d tackle it. Whenever you’re ready, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

When something else is needed

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It won’t solve:

  • Cracked or broken glass
  • Decisions on consent for listed homes
  • Damaged stone surrounds

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Surfaces we seal

  • Brick reveals
  • Sash and case windows
  • Timber door frames
  • Period & listed homes
  • Tenement windows
  • Stone surrounds

What happens on the day

We keep the work tidy and contained to the joints we are treating, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. We start by checking each surround and agreeing the joints to renew.
  2. Old, loose mastic is raked out and the joint cleaned.
  3. We pack any deep gaps so the mastic sits at the right depth.
  4. We mix the sand mastic and apply it by hand, shaping it to the joint.
  5. The mastic is finished to sit tidily against the stone or brick.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks

How to get a quote

We quote each job on its own. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the details and send pictures if you have them.

Windows and doors in Throsk

Throsk is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Alloa Academy, larger buildings have plenty of frames, and the mastic around each one ages.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the joints last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Find out about consent before window work on a listed home
  • Check the mastic when you check the paintwork
  • Sort the mastic before the decorators arrive
  • Keep sills and gutters clear so water drains away

Do not touch or press the mastic while it hardens. It forms a skin fairly soon but needs longer to fully harden.

Crumbling mastic lets rain into the joint. That water can reach the timber frame and the wall so early renewal protects both.

For landlords and businesses

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and the access arrangements.

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which is a bigger problem in a rented property. Keeping joints in good order is simple maintenance that we can handle for you.
