Scatsta homes and the weather
Scatsta is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Island weather, with its wind and salt spray, is tough on the mastic around older windows and doors.
Around Scatsta, as everywhere, sand mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.
Scatsta is in the Shetland Islands. Whether you’re in the middle of Scatsta or further out, sand mastic is available for homes and businesses alike. 63 places in the Shetland Islands are on our list, large and small.
Work in ZE2 works the same way as everywhere else we cover. You’ll find Scatsta on the B9076, so it’s easy for us to get to with everything needed for sand mastic. Nearby, we also carry out sand mastic in Sullom (2 miles west), Brae (3 miles south-west), Firth (4 miles east), Mossbank (4 miles north-east) and Hogaland (5 miles north-west). Island and remote addresses take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

About our sand mastic in Scatsta
Our applicators renew the sand mastic around sash and case windows and doors in stone and brick. Out comes the old, loose mastic, and new mastic is applied and shaped by hand. We work on tenement windows, brick reveals and stone surrounds, and people most often call us about gaps between timber frames and stone or brick and wind and rain getting in round a sash window.
Older stone-built homes in Scotland often have sash and case or timber windows set in stone. Those suit a traditional sand mastic or a neutral-cure sealant, not an acetoxy silicone that can attack some stone.
All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, in Scatsta and everywhere else we cover.

What we’re called out for in Scatsta
Rain on the window surround works into any crack and pushes it out. Exposed elevations normally fail first.
Keep an eye out for these signs:
- Mastic that needs renewing before redecorating
- Wind and rain getting in round a sash window
- Gaps between timber frames and stone or brick
- Modern sealant on a period surround
Whether the job is in Scatsta itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.
Before booking anyone
- Whether they seal over old material or remove it
- How much experience the applicator has
- Which colour the sealant will be
- How the joint is cleaned and prepared
What else we do in Scatsta
Can I do it myself?
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.
When it is not the sealant
In fairness, some problems need a different trade:
- Decayed frames that need repair
- Whether work needs listed building consent
- Crumbling stone or brickwork round the window
If you’re not sure, just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

Why act early in Scatsta
Filling over old, loose mastic does not last. Raking out and preparing the joint gives it a sound base so the new work lasts. Around Scatsta, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.
Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. You will know the price before we begin.
Why Scatsta clients choose us
- Neat joints and a tidy finish
- Every job guaranteed for a year
- We never seal over old sealant
- Sanitary silicone with an anti-fungal additive in wet areas

How the job changes by surface
Timber door frames
Period doors in stone or brick openings are often pointed with sand mastic. The method is the same as for windows.
Sash and case windows
Most of our sand mastic work is on sash windows. Each joint round the box is raked out and renewed.
What we do, step by step
Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we don’t rush it. Every joint is cleaned and dried before new material goes in. All told, the work takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on how many windows. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.
- We check the window surrounds and agree which joints need renewing.
- We rake out the old mastic and clean the joint.
- We pack any deep gaps so the mastic sits at the right depth.
- The mastic is mixed, pressed into the joint by hand and shaped.
- The mastic is finished to sit tidily against the stone or brick.
Before we arrive
- Tell us if parking is tricky
- Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

Aftercare tips
Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:
- Don’t paint over the new mastic
- Get any rot dealt with first
- Don’t run silicone over sand mastic
- Inspect the joints round the windows every year or so
Keep paint scrapers and sanders off the mastic when redecorating. Hard scraping can loosen it.
Small cracks are a sign the mastic is ageing. Renewing it then is simpler than waiting until it falls out.
Common questions in Scatsta
Do you cover Scatsta for sand mastic?
Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Scatsta is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.
Does living near the coast affect sand mastic in Scatsta?
Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are normally the first to need attention.
Can old silicone round a sash window be swapped for sand mastic?
Often, yes. With the silicone removed and the joint cleaned we point it with sand mastic.
Can landlords and businesses book you?
Yes, often. Several properties can go on one quote, and between tenancies is a good time for the work.
Can new sealant go over the old?
No. The old sealant always comes out first, so the new joint bonds to clean surfaces.
Do you remove the old sealant?
Yes, always, and completely. New sealant won’t bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.
What information do you need?
Only a few details: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.
How long does sand mastic take?
Typically it takes a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints. Bigger jobs take longer, and we’ll say how long yours will take.
