Diuranais Sand Mastic
Sand mastic for Diuranais and the surrounding area: careful preparation, the right product and tidy work. Call for a quick quote.
- Open joints round the window box
- Patchy fillers round a sash window
- Mastic that needs renewing before redecorating
Why it’s worth doing now in Diuranais
If you’re redecorating, renew the mastic first. Paint over cracked mastic will not stop the gaps, and the new mastic is traditionally left unpainted. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask about the job first and agree the price before starting.

Sand mastic in Diuranais, done properly
Traditional burnt sand mastic that sits naturally against stone and brick. It’s a good fit for period properties, where modern sealant can look out of place. We work on tenement windows, sash and case windows and brick reveals, and the jobs we see most are gaps round a timber door in stone or brick and mastic worn away on windows facing the weather.
Outdoor sealant needs a dry surface, so window work around Diuranais is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.
You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

When it isn’t the sealant
Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant will not do:
- Sashes that need overhauling
- Timber that has rotted
- Masonry that needs repairing

How the visit works
Once we are on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints. Somewhere like Diuranais may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- We start by checking each surround and agreeing the joints to renew.
- The loose and crumbling mastic is raked out and the joint cleaned.
- Deep voids are packed so the mastic is the right thickness.
- Sand mastic is mixed and applied by hand, then shaped to the joint.
- The mastic is finished to sit tidily against the stone or brick.

Advice
Keeping the joints in good condition
Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:
- Check with your local planning authority if your home is listed
- Make sure water runs off the sill
- Take care around the mastic when scraping paint
- Check the mastic when you check the paintwork
Do not touch or press the mastic while it hardens. It skins over quickly, but takes longer to harden fully.
Gaps round a sash box let in draughts and rain. Left, the gap tends to get bigger.

What affects the quote in Diuranais
Call for a quick quote. The main things that affect it are:
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- How easy the joints are to reach
- The number of rooms or windows
- Any working-time requirements on site
Rather than a set price list, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.
What to tell us for a quote
Photos help, but a description is a good start. Try to tell us:
- Where the property is
- The rough size of the job
- What’s wrong with the joints now
- How we’d reach the joints

Frames and glazing around Diuranais
Diuranais is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.
In and around Diuranais, as anywhere, good sand mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. For jobs in and around Diuranais, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

Diuranais questions
Do you cover smaller places like Diuranais?
Yes, Diuranais is covered. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Does the coastal weather in Diuranais affect outside sealant?
Coastal weather is harder on outside sealant: there’s more wind-driven rain and, closer to the shore, salt in the air. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.
Will it make a mess?
Very little: the area around the joints is protected first, and we tidy up before we go.
Do you work for letting agents?
Yes, often. We can quote for several properties at once, and between tenancies is a good time for the work.
How long does sand mastic take to harden?
The surface skins quite quickly, then hardens over a longer period. Timing depends on the weather and the joint.
Do I have to be there?
For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. Once we have agreed the job, you do not need to watch us work.
Should I check with the council before work on a listed or conservation-area home?
Check with your local planning authority. They decide whether consent is needed.
Which products do you use?
We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Where it moves, gets wet or faces the weather makes a difference, and we will explain our choice.

Should I try it myself first?
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.
