Remedial sealant in Baltasound, done properly
Two decades of sealant work means we recognise most failures quickly. We are ARBOMaster approved and fully insured, and remedial work carries our one-year guarantee. Typical jobs include caulk or the wrong sealant used in a wet area and movement joints that have split or pulled away, on shrunken worktop sealant, botched or over-sealed joints and failed movement joints.
Being further from a city doesn’t change the work: everything old is cut out, the joints are cleaned and dried, and new sealant or grout goes in. The journey and access are simply planned in advance.
All our work is covered by a 12-month guarantee, wherever you are in the Shetland Islands.

Do you need remedial sealant in Baltasound?
Movement tears sealant that is not designed for it. Flexing baths, rocking trays and building movement joints split any bead that is too stiff or too thin.
The problems people generally mention when they call are:
- Beads that never stuck properly
- Repeat leaks from the same joint
- Worktop sealant that has shrunk and split
- Movement joints that have split or pulled away
Schools such as Baltasound Junior High School are buildings too, and washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

When it is not the sealant
To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant will not fix:
- A tray or worktop that needs refixing first
- A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacing)
- Tiles that have come away from the wall
If in doubt, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before you book.

Baltasound homes and their sealant
Baltasound is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.
In the older streets around Kirkhoull, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

What happens on the day
Once we are on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours, depending on how many layers have to come out. Somewhere like Baltasound may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- We start by checking the joint for movement, leaks and the reason it failed.
- We strip the joint completely, removing any layers below.
- We clean the joint, treat any mould and let it dry.
- We use the right backing and sealant for any joint that moves.
- Finally we finish the joint and talk you through what we found.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear the area around the work
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
- Keep children and pets away from the work area

Your questions about remedial sealant in Baltasound
Is remedial sealant in Baltasound guaranteed?
Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.
Is Baltasound within the area you cover?
Yes, Baltasound is covered. We work across all of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
What do you need from me for a quote?
The location, the problem and the rough size of the job. Photos by email help too.
Will there be a smell?
It depends on the product. Some products have a noticeable smell, others very little, and any smell fades as they cure.
Do I need to be at home?
It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. We’re fully insured, and we have been doing sealant work for more than 20 years.
Should I try DIY first?
Sometimes. The key is preparation: remove all the old material and work on a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.
Do you offer different sealant colours?
Generally, yes. White, clear and grey are common, and other colours are available, and we will agree it with you first.
Keeping the joints in good condition
Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Clean sealant with mild products only
- Deal with small splits early
- Keep an eye on the ceiling below the bathroom
- Never seal over old silicone
Keep an eye on the joint at first, particularly where the original failure was caused by movement. If anything changes, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
Movement joints that have split let water into the structure, and left long enough, the edges of the joint can crumble. A joint with sound edges is far easier to reseal.

Why act early in Baltasound
Stripping out botched sealant adds time to a reseal, but rarely a lot: it takes a few hours for most joints, depending on how much old sealant has to come out. Compared with chasing the same leak every few months, it’s time well spent. In an older home around Baltasound, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster.
Leaving a failed joint usually makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

Different surfaces, different methods
Windows & doors
Wrong-coloured or messy mastic can be replaced for appearance too, matched to the frame colour.
Leaking trays & enclosures
Repeat shower leaks often come from a tray that flexes or an enclosure sealed in the wrong place. We check both before any new sealant goes on.
