When something else is needed

In fairness, some problems need a different trade:

  • Water coming from plumbing rather than grout
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving
  • Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling

Not sure which it is? You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before booking.

About our regrouting in Timsgarry

Our applicators rake out the old grout to an even depth, taking care not to chip the tile edges. The joints are then vacuumed, regrouted and cleaned off, and the corners get fresh silicone. If you have cracked or crumbling grout lines and grout washed out of a shower, we can help.

A bathroom in a place like Timsgarry gets the same daily wear as one in a city flat. Generally soft Scottish water means less limescale, but steam still lets mould into sealant and grout.

You’re covered for a year from the day we finish. If there’s a problem with it, please drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Not every job suits DIY: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs need the right product, the right access and the right method.

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

How we quote for regrouting

You will get a clear quote before we start. It takes into account:

  • Whether there’s mould to deal with
  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • The number and length of the joints

No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all play a part.

Helping us quote

To make quoting easier, let us know:

  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • A few pictures by email, if you can
  • The type of property
  • The rough size of the job

Getting a quote is simple: tell us what needs doing and where and its rough size. A few pictures by email make the job easier to understand, and we will take it from there.

Surface by surface

Bathroom wall tiles

Splash areas around basins and baths stain first. We can do part of a wall or all of it.

Corners and edges

Internal corners move, so they get silicone, not grout.

Timsgarry: your questions answered

Will you come out to Timsgarry?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is Timsgarry in your area for regrouting?

Yes, Timsgarry is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Could my grout be a different colour after regrouting?

Yes, plenty of people choose to. Darker grout can hide marks, while lighter grout brightens a room.

How soon can the shower be used after regrouting?

It varies with the products and the room. We will give you a time to follow at the end of the visit.

Do the sealants smell?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Ventilation helps.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. Hotels, offices and other businesses use us, and we’re fully insured.

What sealant do you use?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, chosen to suit the joint. We will tell you what we are using and why.

Will regrouting fix loose tiles?

Loose or hollow tiles are a sign of a problem behind them. Grout on its own will not fix that and we’ll say so before going ahead.

What we’re called out for in Timsgarry

Soap scum and limescale build up on grout and stick to it. The grout beneath can stain and weaken, and at that point, new grout is the better answer.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Grout that makes sound tiles look old
  • Dirty, worn grout on a tiled floor
  • Grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned
  • Grout in a colour the owner wants to change

Around Timsgarry, as everywhere, regrouting is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Before you book anyone

  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • Is VAT in the price?
  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it

What regrouting looks like in Timsgarry

Timsgarry is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.

If you live in an older home near Uig Parish Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

What we do, step by step

Most of a good job is in the preparation, so that is where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. All told, the work takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. For a place like Timsgarry, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. We rake out the grout evenly, protecting the tile edges.
  3. We vacuum the joints so the new grout bonds.
  4. We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us if parking is tricky
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
