Regrouting in Shere, done properly

Grout is the filler between your tiles, while sealant goes where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop. Once grout starts to crack or wash away, water can get in behind the tiles. Our job is to rake it out and put new grout in and renew the silicone at the edges. If you have cracked or crumbling grout lines and kitchen splashback grout stained by grease, we can help, on tiled floors, shower walls and wet rooms alike.

Being in a small place like Shere makes no difference to the job itself: the journey and access are simply agreed in advance. Once we’re there, the bathroom or kitchen gets the same care as anywhere else.

Whatever the size of the job, you get the same 12-month guarantee in Shere and across Surrey.

Should I try it myself first?

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Common problems we fix in Shere

Grout is porous, so water, soap and grime soak into it. Over time it stains, softens and starts to crumble, especially in a shower that’s used every day.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Grout in a colour the owner wants to change
  • Kitchen splashback grout stained by grease
  • Grout washed out of a shower
  • Grout in corners that has cracked

Rented homes near Gomshall station change hands often, and stained grout drags a rental down, and regrouting between lets puts that right.

What happens on the day

Before we leave, we go over the finished joints with you and tell you how long to leave it. The work normally takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area, depending on the size of the job. In a small place like Shere, access is usually the main thing to plan. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.

  1. We agree the area to be regrouted and point out any loose tiles.
  2. We remove the old grout carefully.
  3. The joints are cleaned out and vacuumed.
  4. We grout the joints and wipe the tiles clean.
  5. We renew the silicone at the corners and edges.

How to prepare

  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area

Advice

What happens if it’s left?

It’s tempting to fill a few cracks yourself, but the patches often do not match and the old grout carries on failing. Regrouting the whole area gives an even, lasting finish. Around Shere, older homes often have timber in their floors and frames, and water through a failed joint can rot timber if it’s left.

We do not show prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote.

Regrouting around Shere

Hard water is the norm across most of the South East, which leaves limescale on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Shere CofE Aided Infant School, washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes. If you live in an older home near The Church of St James, older homes can move a little, which is hard on rigid grout and tired sealant.

When something else is needed

We won’t take on work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • A structure that flexes behind the tiles
  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • A leaking shower valve or waste

If you are not sure, just phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

How to look after the new joints

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:

  • Do not use strong acidic cleaners on grout
  • Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower
  • Open a window or run the fan to clear steam
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges

Clean the grout with a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft brush. Keep harsh bleach and acid limescale removers away from it, as they can break grout down.

Leaving failed grout can mean tiles come loose. By then, new grout alone is not enough so early action pays.

Landlords, agents and businesses in Shere

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s quick to put right between tenancies. We can quote for more than one property at once.

Hotels need rooms back in use, so we plan the work room by room around your bookings where we can. We’ve worked in hotels as well as homes and businesses.

Shere questions

I let a flat near Gomshall station. Can you help?

Yes, we work for letting agents and landlords. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and tell us about the property, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Will you come out to Shere?

Yes. Shere is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

What goes in the corners, grout or silicone?

Internal corners and edges are sealed with flexible silicone. Grout in those joints cracks as the building moves.

Do you remove the old sealant?

Yes, every time. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so any old material comes out before anything new goes in.

Could my grout be a different colour after regrouting?

Yes. With the old grout removed, the new colour fills the whole joint rather than sitting on top.

What should I tell you?

Just the basics: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email.

Where do you work from?

Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. Our applicators cover Shere.

Can I do it myself?

For a simple, easy-to-reach joint, a careful DIYer can do a reasonable job. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.
