Regrouting in Old Town

Regrouting in Old Town, done properly

We regroute showers, bathroom walls and floors, splashbacks and wet rooms. Some jobs are a whole room, others just the shower. Whatever the size, the method stays the same. Typical jobs include grout in a colour the owner wants to change and floor grout that won’t come clean, across kitchen splashbacks, tiled floors and wet rooms.

Smaller places like Old Town still have plenty of bathrooms that work hard every day. Older or newer, every room gets the same approach: all the old material out, the joint cleaned and dried, then new sealant or grout.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something isn’t right with it in that time, tell us and we will put it right.

The process

Once we’re on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. Most jobs then take a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room. For a job in Old Town, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Outdoor jobs depend on a dry day, since sealant needs a dry surface.

  1. Every tile area is checked for hollow or loose tiles first.
  2. We rake out the grout evenly, protecting the tile edges.
  3. The joints are vacuumed clean.
  4. New grout is pressed into the joints and the tiles are cleaned.
  5. Silicone goes into the corners and along the edges.

How to prepare

  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
  • Clear the area around the work

Common questions in Old Town

Do you work for hotels and guest houses in Old Town?

Yes, we work for hotels as well as homes and businesses. A room-by-room programme keeps most rooms in use while the work goes on.

I let a flat near Eastbourne station. Can you help?

Yes. We work for landlords and letting agents as well as householders, and several properties can be quoted together. You can phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with the details for a clear quote.

We do. Our applicators work in Old Town, and the service is the same as everywhere else.

Can you regrout just the shower?

Yes, that is common. The shower usually fails first, so many people regrout just that part.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Yes, we can. Several rooms, windows or areas can go on one quote.

Should I try DIY first?

Sometimes. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. If it does not work out, we can redo it.

When can I use the shower again?

The wait depends on the materials and how warm the room is. We’ll give you a time to follow when the job is done.

What sealant do you use?

The product depends on the job: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. We use products from Arbo and Everbuild.

If you let a flat or house near Eastbourne station, a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

What sealant work can’t fix

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant will not fix:

  • A floor or wall that keeps moving
  • A leaking wet room membrane
  • Cracked or broken tiles

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 464 0079 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

What we seal

  • Tiled floors
  • Wet rooms
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Bathroom wall tiles
  • Bathroom floors
  • Shower walls

Different surfaces, different methods

Corners and edges

We reseal edges at the same time as regrouting, so everything is renewed at once.

Bathroom wall tiles

We can regroute all the walls in a bathroom, depending on the area. It’s a good time to change the grout colour.

Looking after it afterwards

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Use gentle cleaners on grout
  • Keep harsh bleach and acid cleaners off the grout
  • Skip wire brushes and scourers
  • Keep an eye on the silicone along the edges

Before we leave, you’ll know when the shower can be used. Please follow it, and avoid scrubbing the new grout hard for the first few days.

Grout that stays dark after cleaning is starting to fail. Regrouting at this stage is straightforward while the tiles are still sound.

Why act early in Old Town

New grout smeared over the old doesn’t bond well. It sits thinly on top and soon flakes away, taking any repair with it. Removing the old grout to an even depth lets the new grout key in properly. In an older home around Old Town, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the sealant itself.

What it costs depends on the size of the job, how hard the old material is to remove and access to the work. You’ll have a clear quote before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Landlord and commercial work in Old Town

Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance.

Can I do it myself?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. Everything old must be removed first.
