About our regrouting in Abbey Field
We take the old grout out to a consistent depth, taking care not to chip the tile edges. After vacuuming, new grout goes in and the tiles are wiped clean, with silicone renewed in the corners. We’re often asked to deal with crumbling grout between the tiles and shower grout that has worn away, on bathroom floors, wet rooms and kitchen splashbacks.
Homes around Abbey Field range from older cottages to more recent houses. In older homes, walls and floors can move a little more, so the right flexible sealant matters.
The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right with it, ring 0345 464 0079 or email us.

Can I do it myself?
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

That depends on the joint. Work at height, movement joints, fire-rated gaps and large areas are best left to a professional.
How the job changes by surface
Corners and edges
Where tiles meet a bath, tray or worktop, the joint is sealed. Grout in that joint wouldn’t last.
Bathroom floors
Regrouting a floor brightens the whole room. The edges where floor meets wall or bath get silicone.
Regrouting in Abbey Field: local notes
Abbey Field has hotels and guest accommodation nearby. Hotel bathrooms are part of our work as well as homes, and can be done room by room. Most of the South East has hard water, which leaves limescale on sealant, grout and fittings.
Schools such as Montgomery Junior School are buildings too, and washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes. If you let a flat or house near Colchester Town station, a regrout while the flat is empty is quicker than working around a tenant. Homes close to St Michael's Church include some older properties, and timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.
Abbey Field is about 1 mile south-east of Camulodunum, in Essex. Why act early in Abbey Field
Regrouting keeps the tiles you already have. Retiling is a much bigger job: stripping, making good, new tiles and new grout, and the room is out of use for longer. When the tiles are fine, it’s the sensible first step. Around Abbey Field, water from a failed joint in an older home can soak into timber and plaster, and that’s a much bigger job than renewing the sealant.
Every job is a little different, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all make a difference.

In fairness, there are a few things sealant won’t fix:
- Waterproofing that has failed below the tiling
- Movement in a stud wall or floor
- Leaks from pipes, valves or wastes (a plumber’s job)
If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will say what we think before you book.

How it works
On the day, we look over the joints with you first, so you know exactly what we’re doing. We protect the surfaces around the joints before work begins. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on the area. For a job in Abbey Field, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. If the work is outside, the weather plays a part, as sealant needs a dry surface.
- We check the tiles for any that are hollow or loose.
- The old grout is removed to an even depth.
- The joints are vacuumed clean.
- We regrout the joints and clean the tile faces.
- We finish with silicone in the moving joints.
Getting ready for the visit
- Keep children and pets away from the work area
- Mention if the joints have been sealed before
- Move anything stored near the joints

Advice
What affects the cost of regrouting
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- Which sealant suits the joint
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- When we can work, for business premises
- The amount of work
Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, how we reach it and what it needs, along with when we can work on site. Call for a quick quote and we will go through it with you.
What we need to know
Photos help, but a description is a good start. Please mention:
- Roughly how big the job is
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
- Whether it has been sealed before
- The problem you’ve noticed
The more we know about the job, the more useful the quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.
Aftercare tips
Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Use gentle cleaners on grout
- Run the extractor fan during and after a shower
- Get any tile that moves checked promptly
- Rinse soap off the tiles after each shower
Leave the area unused for as long as we advise, so it cures fully. From then on, a quick rinse after showering helps and let the room air.
Fixing grout early is a small job. Left, the same problem can let water through so it’s worth dealing with as soon as you spot it.
