How we handle gutter sealing in Rodmell

We seal leaking gutter joints, end caps, fascia and soffit joints plus roofline trims and garage door frames. It’s joint work, not replacing the gutter. We work on soffit joints, garage door frames and uPVC fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are dripping gutter ends and water dripping where gutter sections meet.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Rodmell is booked around the forecast. Let us know about access to every wall, plus any garages or outbuildings.

Big or small, you get the same one-year guarantee.

How it works

On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we’ll take it from there. The work itself takes anything from an hour or two to a few hours from start to finish. In a small place like Rodmell, access is normally the main thing to plan. If the job is outside, mention outbuildings, exposed walls and how to reach them.

  1. We look at the gutters, fascias and trims and agree the joints to seal.
  2. We clean out each joint.
  3. The joints are dried.
  4. The sealant is applied and finished.
  5. The joints are checked once sealed.

How to prepare

  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area

Can I do it myself?

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

Common problems we fix in Rodmell

Gutter joints depend on seals that wear out. Sun and cold make the gutter expand and contract, and old seals crack or slip.

If you can see any of these, it’s time to have the joints looked at:

  • Damp on an inside wall under a dripping gutter
  • Fascia boards with gaps between them
  • Streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint
  • Drips from gutter joints and end caps

For an older house near a landmark such as St Peter's Church, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

What your quote should include

  • Who turns up on the day
  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • Is VAT in the price?

Roofline trims

We seal the trims, not the roof. Roofing problems need a roofer.

Gutter joints

A dripping joint doesn’t always mean a failed gutter. Sealing the joint often stops it.

When it is not the sealant

To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:

  • Leaks from the roof rather than a joint
  • A gutter length that has split
  • Gutters that have dropped or pulled away

Not sure which it is? You can phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Walls and rooflines in Rodmell

With historic houses such as Monk's House (about 0.4 miles north-east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Rodmell as well as newer homes. In older buildings, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth. Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day.

Managing a site like Priory School? Then movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. For landlords with property near Southease station, a dripping gutter joint or loose fascia trim is easy to miss until damp shows inside.

Aftercare tips

Good habits help new joints last longer. A few tips:

  • Clear leaves and moss from the gutters
  • Keep an eye out for wet patches below a joint
  • Do not lean ladders against the gutter itself
  • Check the gutters during heavy rain

Keep downpipes clear so the gutter can drain. A blocked pipe backs water up to the joints.

The sooner a gutter leak is sealed, the less water reaches the wall. If we find a bigger problem, we’ll tell you.
