Should I try it myself first?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

Gutter sealing in New Trows

Our work covers gutter joints and end caps as well as fascias and soffits plus roofline trims and garage door frames. It’s all about the joints, not replacing the gutter. We’re often asked to deal with water running down the wall below the gutter and cracked sealant along roofline trims, across soffit joints, roofline trims and gutter end caps.

In and around a place like New Trows, many buildings face open ground and take the full weather. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, in New Trows and everywhere else we cover.

Walls and rooflines in New Trows

Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.

Managing a site like Lesmahagow High School? Then larger buildings have long runs of movement joint that eventually need resealing.

What we can’t put right

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what new sealant will not do:

  • Gutters that have dropped or pulled away
  • Rotten or damaged fascia boards
  • Roof leaks, slipped tiles or failed flashing (a roofer’s job)

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think.

What we seal

  • Soffit joints
  • Gutter joints
  • Gutter end caps
  • uPVC fascias
  • Roofline trims
  • Garage door frames

How it works

When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes anything from an hour or two to a few hours. Outside jobs in New Trows need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We look at where the water is coming from and check the gutter is not broken or sagging.
  2. The joint or trim is cleaned out and old sealant removed.
  3. The joint is dried, because sealant won’t bond to a wet surface.
  4. We seal the joint with a sealant made for gutters and outdoor use.
  5. We look along the gutter and clear debris around the joints.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

New Trows: your questions answered

What guarantee comes with gutter sealing in New Trows?

Every job comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever it is. We are also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

Is New Trows within the area you cover?

Yes. New Trows is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Is sealing fascia joints something you do?

Yes. We seal the joints, not replace the boards and we will let you know if a board has failed.

What about gutters on a second or third storey?

Low gutters are simple to reach. If it’s higher up, let us know and we’ll confirm the access.

Is it worth trying it myself?

That depends on the joint. High-level, external movement and fire-rated joints are professional jobs.

Is sealant enough for a gutter that has dropped?

Sealant will not hold a sagging gutter. A gutter installer needs to refix it, and we’ll tell you if that is what we find.

Do you install new fascias or gutters?

We don’t replace gutters or fascias. If a gutter is broken or sagging, we will tell you so you can call the right trade.

Can a leaking gutter joint be sealed?

Most of the time. A sagging or cracked gutter needs more than sealant, and we will tell you.

For landlords and businesses

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report. We can quote for more than one property at once.

A neglected joint can let water reach the structure, which matters even more when someone else lives there. Resealing at the right time is simple maintenance that we can handle for you.

Surface by surface

Garage door frames

The joint between frame and brickwork moves and weathers. We use a sealant made for outdoor joints.

Gutter end caps

End caps take the pressure of water running along the gutter. When their seal fails, they drip.

Signs you need gutter sealing in New Trows

End caps get knocked or pushed by water. If the seal fails, water escapes at the end.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Internal damp traced to a gutter joint
  • Streaks down the brickwork from a leaking joint
  • Quick sealant fixes on gutters that didn’t last
  • Old sealant on roofline trims that has split

Homes close to Lesmahagow Old Parish Church include some older properties, and the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How hidden problems are handled
  • Whether the sealant suits the joint

How to choose a mastic man

Why it’s worth doing now in New Trows

Replacing fascias because of open joints is usually unnecessary. Sealing the joints tidies them up as long as the boards are in good condition. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. We take all of that into account in your quote.
