Trusted gutter sealing in Coalhall

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.

How we handle gutter sealing in Coalhall

A leaking gutter joint marks the wall and wets the ground underneath. Often a reseal is enough if the gutter isn’t damaged. Typical jobs include garage door frames letting rain in and earlier gutter repairs that have peeled off, on soffit joints, roofline trims and garage door frames.

Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering.

Our hiring checklist

Outside joints around Coalhall

Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex. Coalhall is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, which means gutter, fascia and roofline joints has to cope with a lot of rain.

For an older house near a landmark such as Schaw Kirk, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

Keeping the joints in good condition

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Keep an eye out for wet patches below a joint
  • Get leaks sealed before the wet months
  • Do not leave a sagging gutter
  • Watch for drips in a downpour

Leave the new sealant to cure as we advise and avoid disturbing it.

Once roofline sealant splits, water can get behind it. Resealing early protects the boards and the wall below.

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, with over 20 years’ experience in sealant work.

The process

A visit follows a simple pattern: we look at the joints together, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, do the work and clear up. Most jobs take a few hours, depending on the number of joints and the access. Somewhere like Coalhall may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We find where the water is coming from and check the gutter is sound.
  2. The old sealant and dirt are cleaned out of the joint.
  3. We dry the joint so the new sealant can bond.
  4. We seal the joint with a sealant made for gutters.
  5. The gutter is checked and debris around the joints cleared.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts

Soffit joints

We choose a sealant colour that suits the soffit, where one is available.

Roofline trims

Roofline trims rely on sealant at their joints. When it splits, water can get behind.

What happens if it’s left?

You do not need new fascias just because the joints have opened. Sealing the joints tidies them up if the boards are sound. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.
