Windows and doors in Wick

Wick is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

If you let a flat or house near Wick station, leaking glazing joints, shower screens or conservatory seals are worth sorting between tenancies. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Wick High School, larger buildings have plenty of frames, and the mastic around each one ages.

Wick is in Highland. Homes, rented property, offices and hotels in Wick can book us for glazing silicone, old or new, large or small. The work is guaranteed for a year. Wick is one of 253 towns and villages in Highland we cover.

Every address in KW1 is within our area for glazing silicone, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Local streets include Market Street, Argyle Square and High Street, all of which we cover. With the A99 and A882 close by, Wick is easy for our applicators to reach. We also cover the places around Wick: Whiterow (1 mile south), Staxigoe (1 mile north-east), Ackergillshore (2 miles north), Haster (3 miles west) and Reiss (3 miles north-west). Wick is one of the larger places we cover in Highland. Remote and island addresses need a little more planning, so tell us where you are when you ask for a quote.

Glazing silicone for homes and businesses in Wick

Glass, frames and walls all move at different rates, so the sealant between them does a lot of work. When it cracks or lets go, water gets in. We replace it with a glazing silicone that suits the glass and frame. Common call-outs are for water running down inside the glass and stained, discoloured glazing silicone, across glass-to-frame joints, conservatory frames and glass-to-glass joints.

Outdoor sealant needs a dry surface, so window work around Wick is planned around the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, large or small.

How to look after the new joints

Aftercare is simple:

  • Do not use a blade near the sealant
  • Avoid strong solvents on or near the sealant
  • Use a gentle glass cleaner and a soft cloth
  • Check the silicone on glass every year or so

Avoid scraping near the new silicone when you clean. A soft cloth or sponge is best.

A leaking shower screen may not show at first. Water can soak into the floor or reach the room below long before you see it.

What affects the quote in Wick

Your quote is based on your job. We look at:

  • How many areas need sealing
  • Working hours on commercial sites
  • Whether the work is at height
  • The product the joint needs

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.

What we need to know

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • What’s wrong with the joints now
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs

Asking for a quote is easy: let us know the job and the location. Photos by email help us understand the job, and we will take it from there.

What happens on the day

A visit follows a simple pattern: we check the joints, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, carry out the job and clear up. It usually takes a few hours for most jobs. Around Wick, distance and access matter more than parking. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First, we trace the leak and check it’s coming through a sealant joint.
  2. The old sealant is removed from the glass and frame without scratching them.
  3. We clean the joint with a solvent that suits the glass and frame.
  4. New glazing silicone goes in and is tooled to a neat finish.
  5. We check the joints and, where safe, run water over them.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises

Conservatory frames

Leaks often start where the frame meets the wall. We cut out the old sealant and reseal.

Shower screens

Most shower screen leaks come from the wall or tray joint. Both are resealed with anti-fungal silicone.

Your questions about glazing silicone in Wick

Do you cover smaller places like Wick?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Does living near the coast affect glazing silicone in Wick?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.

What sealant do you use on glazing?

We pick a glazing silicone to suit the materials. Neutral-cure silicone is the usual choice.

Do the sealants smell?

Sometimes, a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.

When is the sealant fully cured?

That depends on the sealant used, so please follow the time we give you.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We’re an ARBOMaster approved applicator, the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants.

What do you put in the joint?

Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Can you reseal a frameless shower screen?

Yes. We remove the old silicone carefully, and the joints are cleaned and resealed.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and the access arrangements and we will quote.

Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report, and it’s easy to sort out between tenants. We can quote for more than one property at once.

When it is not the sealant

Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. Sealant won’t put right:

  • A roof that has moved or dropped
  • Frames that have decayed or split
  • Water coming through the roof rather than a sealant joint

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Why it’s worth doing now in Wick

Replacing windows or a shower screen isn’t needed for a failed joint. Sound glass and frames generally just need resealing. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Instead of a standard rate, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.
