Glazing silicone for Whiteface homes and businesses

About our glazing silicone in Whiteface

A frameless shower screen depends on its silicone. Leaks generally come from the wall joint or the tray joint and both get fresh anti-fungal silicone. We work on glass balustrade bases, conservatory frames and glass-to-frame joints, and common reasons people get in touch are water tracking down the inner face of the glass and split or lifting silicone on glass.

Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. The sealant has to suit the stone, which rules out acetoxy silicones that can mark or attack it.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee, so you are not left on your own once the job is done.

How to look after the new joints

A little care helps the new joints last. We recommend:

  • Check the silicone on glass every year or so
  • Clear the conservatory gutters regularly
  • Run a squeegee over the glass when you’re done
  • Clean glass with a mild cleaner and a soft cloth

Squeegee a shower screen after each shower and keep the room ventilated. That slows mould growth on the bead.

If silicone on glass has cracked, water is already getting in. Resealing now is a small job, compared with repairing damaged frames or plaster.

What we do, step by step

Most of a good job is in the preparation, and we do not rush it. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it generally takes anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job. Somewhere like Whiteface may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We trace the leak and confirm it’s a sealant joint.
  2. The failed silicone is cut out without marking the glass or frame.
  3. The joint is cleaned and degreased.
  4. A neutral-cure glazing silicone is applied and tooled.
  5. Each joint is checked and, where possible, water-tested.

Questions from Whiteface

Does living near the coast affect glazing silicone in Whiteface?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Can you do glazing silicone in Whiteface?

Yes, Whiteface is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we will send you a clear quote.

Is it enough to run a bead over the old sealant?

New silicone will not bond to old silicone and water gets between the layers. The old bead always comes out first.

Is the work guaranteed?

You get our 12-month guarantee on all our work.

Do I have to be there?

We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. For inside work, that normally means someone being in.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. ARBOMaster is the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants, and we are part of it.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

We’re happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Just make sure your landlord agrees.

Will resealing stop my conservatory leaking?

In many cases, as long as sealant is the cause. We find where the water gets in first, so you know what you are paying for.

What sealant work cannot fix

To be straight with you, there are a few things sealant will not fix:

  • A frame that needs repairing or replacing
  • A roof that has moved or dropped
  • Glass that needs replacing

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think before booking.

Where we work in Whiteface

  • Rooflights
  • Glass balustrade bases
  • Conservatory frames
  • Shower screens
  • Glass-to-frame joints
  • Glass-to-glass joints

Leave it or put it right?

Glazing joints need a sealant made for the job. A general-purpose tube may not bond well or may react with the frame so we choose a glazing silicone instead. In a place like Whiteface, small leaks are easy to put off, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

There are no prices on our website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote and we will talk you through it.

When to call us in Whiteface

On shower screens, constant water and cleaning products wear silicone. Mould gets into it and the joint starts to lift.

People generally contact us when they notice something like this:

  • Rooflight joints letting water in
  • Water tracking down the inner face of the glass
  • A quick top-up bead that didn’t last
  • Black or yellowed silicone on glass joints

Whether the job is in Whiteface itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How long the guarantee is
  • How much experience the applicator has
  • When the joint can take water or movement
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?

Glazing silicone in Whiteface: local notes

Whiteface is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on glazing joints and frame seals, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.

Around Whiteface, as everywhere, glazing silicone is only as good as the preparation behind it.
