Monreith: your questions answered
Do you cover Monreith for glazing silicone?
Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Monreith is part of that. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing, and we’ll send you a clear quote.
Do you cover smaller places like Monreith?
Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Which products do you use?
Each joint gets the product that suits it. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We are fully insured.
Where are you based?
Mr Mastic is based in Crawley. We cover Monreith and the rest of Dumfries and Galloway, along with the rest of our area.
I rent my home. Can I book you?
Yes. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.
Will there be a smell?
Sometimes, a little. It fades as the sealant cures.
Is it enough to run a bead over the old sealant?
Silicone doesn’t stick to silicone, so a top-up soon lets water through. The old bead always comes out first.
Glazing silicone in Monreith, done properly
Glazing joints need a sealant made for glass. Our applicators use neutral-cure glazing silicone, which suits glass and most frame materials, and we tool it to a neat, even finish. If you have glass-to-glass joints that have split and leaks from the base of a shower screen, we can put it right, on glass balustrade bases, rooflights and glass-to-frame joints alike.
In and around a place like Monreith, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill, so the mastic there works hard.
All our work comes with our 12-month guarantee, wherever you are in Dumfries and Galloway.

How to look after the new joints
Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:
- Clean glass with a mild cleaner and a soft cloth
- Keep conservatory gutters clear of leaves
- Don’t use a blade near the sealant
- Use gentle products around the joints
Use mild cleaners on and around the silicone. Strong solvents can soften or mark it.
A small conservatory leak soon spreads. Water runs along frames and down walls so it’s best dealt with straight away.
What the job involves on each surface
Rooflights
Rooflight leaks can come from the sealant or the roof. We find the cause first.
Glass-to-frame joints
We cut the old silicone from the glass without scratching it and reseal with glazing silicone.
What sealant work cannot fix
It helps to know what we cannot do:
- A roof that has moved or dropped
- Rotten or badly damaged frames
- A sealed unit that has misted inside
If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Can I do it myself?
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
Windows and doors in Monreith
Monreith is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. Monreith is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, so there’s plenty of rain for glazing joints and frame seals to keep out.
Around Monreith, as everywhere, glazing silicone is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Common problems we fix in Monreith
New silicone over old silicone will not bond. Many failed joints we see have been topped up rather than cut out, and water gets between the layers.
The most common problems we see are:
- Mouldy sealant around glass panels
- Shower screens leaking along the wall or tray
- Water running down inside the glass
- Sealant that was laid over old silicone and failed
For jobs in and around Monreith, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether all the old sealant comes out first
- How hidden problems are handled
- Whether you can choose the colour
- What the cure time is
What happens on the day
The work is kept neat and contained to the area we are working on, so you can get on with your day. Expect the work to take a few hours, depending on how many joints need doing, and we explain the cure time before we leave. In smaller Scottish places, parking is generally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints, and the visit is planned around that.
- First we agree the joints to be done.
- We cut away the failed silicone.
- We clean and prepare the joint.
- New glazing silicone goes in and is finished neatly.
- We inspect the work and test it where we can.
Before we arrive
- On commercial sites, let us know about site rules
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
- Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
