Glazing silicone for Longhope homes and businesses

Glazing silicone in Longhope, done properly

We renew glazing silicone on conservatories, rooflights and glass panels, as well as frameless shower screens and glass balustrade bases. Each joint is cut out, cleaned and resealed. We work on shower screens, glass-to-glass joints and glass-to-frame joints, and people most often call us about failed sealant around rooflight glass and mouldy sealant around glass panels.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses, many standing in the open. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain, so the mastic there works hard.

Your job is guaranteed for a year, as with all our work.

Why it’s worth doing now in Longhope

A quick bead over the old sealant might stop a drip for a while, but new silicone will not bond to old and water soon finds its way back. A proper reseal is the lasting answer. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water behind a failed seal does the most damage when nobody’s watching.

Instead of a standard rate, we look at what your job involves: the amount of work, the old material and the access. You’ll know the price before we begin.

Longhope homes and the weather

Longhope is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. On the islands, wind and salt spray are hard on outside sealant.

For jobs in and around Longhope, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish. In and around Longhope, as anywhere, good glazing silicone starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Longhope is about 15 miles south-west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. Homes, rented property, offices and hotels in Longhope can book us for glazing silicone. The work is guaranteed for a year. Across the Orkney Islands, we cover 51 places, and Longhope is one of them.

Aftercare tips

Looking after new joints is easy:

  • Do not leave a drip for the next storm
  • Check the silicone on glass every year or so
  • Wipe the screen down after showering
  • Clear the conservatory gutters regularly

Avoid scraping near the new silicone when cleaning the glass. A soft cloth or sponge is best.

A small conservatory leak soon spreads. Water runs along frames and down walls, so get it looked at when you first see it.

Surface by surface

Glass-to-frame joints

Glass-to-frame joints need a sealant that bonds to both. We choose a product that suits both.

Shower screens

Silicone holds the water in on frameless screens. We renew it without marking the glass.

When something else is needed

Before you book, it’s worth knowing the limits too:

  • A sagging or failing conservatory roof
  • A sealed unit that has misted inside
  • Water coming through the roof rather than a sealant joint

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

  • Glass balustrade bases

Longhope: your questions answered

Do you cover Longhope for glazing silicone?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Longhope is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Does living near the coast affect glazing silicone in Longhope?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are normally the first to need attention.

Where is Mr Mastic based?

Our base is Crawley. Our area covers South East England, London and Scotland.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We’re fully insured for every job we do.

Can you reseal the base of a glass balustrade?

We can. The old sealant is removed and the joint resealed using a sealant that suits the materials.

When is the sealant fully cured?

Most sealants are touch-dry well before they’re fully cured. We’ll tell you how long to leave the joint before we leave.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. We work in offices, washrooms, hotels and other commercial premises, as well as homes. We can talk about working times when we quote.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator and we’re fully insured too.

What happens on the day

Our applicators work methodically: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. Typically it takes anything from an hour or two to most of a day, depending on the size of the job, and the area is left clean. Somewhere like Longhope may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First, we trace the leak and check it’s coming through a sealant joint.
  2. The old sealant is removed from the glass and frame without scratching them.
  3. The glass and frame are cleaned and degreased.
  4. We apply a neutral-cure glazing silicone and tool it smooth.
  5. We look over every joint and, where we can, test it with water.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about access, such as stairs, a lift or high-level joints
  • Clear items away from the joints we’re working on
  • Mention any parking rules near the property

Should I try it myself first?

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. Silicone doesn’t stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
