How we handle glazing silicone in Grimness
Glazing joints need a sealant made for glass. Our applicators use neutral-cure glazing silicone, which suits glass and most frame materials, finished with a neat, even bead. Typical jobs include failed sealant around rooflight glass and black or yellowed silicone on glass joints, on glass-to-glass joints, conservatory frames and glass-to-frame joints.
Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses, many standing in the open. Wind-driven rain finds any gap around a frame or sill.
We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.

Why deal with it now?
Fixing a leaking screen early protects what’s underneath. Water from a failed joint can soak into the floor before it shows. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.
Combining jobs into one visit usually makes better use of the time than several visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. We’ll send you a clear quote for the lot.

Your questions about glazing silicone in Grimness
Will you come out to Grimness?
Yes. Grimness is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is Grimness in your area for glazing silicone?
Yes, Grimness is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.
When is the sealant fully cured?
Many sealants skin over quickly but take longer to cure fully. We will tell you how long to leave the joint before we leave.
What guarantee do I get?
Our one-year guarantee covers every job.
How long will you be here?
Typically it takes a few hours, depending on how many joints need doing. Larger jobs naturally take longer.
Do you take out the old sealant first?
Yes. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, so we never do it.
Is a special sealant needed for glass?
We pick a glazing silicone to suit the materials. Neutral-cure products suit most glass and frames, as some acetoxy types can attack certain metals.
Can I do it myself?
Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. The usual mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using too much.
The process
Our applicators work methodically: protection first, then preparation, sealing and a tidy-up. For most jobs that takes a few hours for most jobs and we leave things clean and tidy. Outside jobs in Grimness need a dry day, because sealant will not bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.
- First we agree the joints to be done.
- Old sealant is removed from the glass and frame.
- The surfaces are cleaned with a suitable solvent.
- New glazing silicone goes in and is finished neatly.
- The joints are checked before we leave.
How to prepare
- For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
- Tell us about any water getting in

Can I do it myself?
The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, then guaranteed for a year.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

Windows and doors in Grimness
Grimness is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. That is hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and sound outside sealant is part of that.
For jobs in and around Grimness, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

Do you need glazing silicone in Grimness?
Silicone will not bond to a dirty surface. Where the joint wasn’t cleaned and degreased, the bead can peel away early.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- A quick top-up bead that didn’t last
- Water tracking down the inner face of the glass
- Glazing silicone that has cracked or come away
- Failed joints on frameless glass
Around Grimness, as everywhere, glazing silicone is only as good as the preparation behind it.
