Glazing silicone in Glencoe

Sealant on glazing doesn’t last for ever. Sun, rain and movement wear it down and cracked joints let water in. Resealing puts that right. We work on shower screens, glass balustrade bases and glass-to-frame joints, and the jobs we see most are failed joints on frameless glass and failed sealant around rooflight glass.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses, many standing in the open. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain.

We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

Your questions about glazing silicone in Glencoe

Is Glencoe in your area for glazing silicone?

Yes, Glencoe is within the area we cover. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job.

Will you come out to Glencoe?

Yes, Glencoe is covered. We work across all of Scotland, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can a conservatory leak be sealed?

That depends where the water is getting in. Sealant joints we can renew but roof and panel problems need another trade.

Which products do you use?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Can I choose the sealant colour?

Normally, yes. Sealants come in white, clear, grey and other colours for many products, and we agree the colour with you before any work starts.

Is balustrade sealant something you do?

Yes, we reseal the joint at the base channel. Fitting glass is a separate trade.

How long does glazing silicone take?

Most jobs take a few hours, depending on how many joints need doing, including preparation and clearing up. We will confirm how long when we quote.

What should I tell you?

Just the basics: the address or postcode, what’s wrong and any access issues. Then email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What happens if it’s left?

A leaking joint will not fix itself. Left, water can mark floors, damage plaster and rot timber so early action saves a bigger repair. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

Doing several joints on one visit generally makes better use of the time than several visits, so it’s worth mentioning everything you’d like done. We’ll send you a clear quote for the lot.

The process

Once we’re on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. Most jobs then take a few hours for most jobs. For a place like Glencoe, longer drives are planned in advance. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. First, we check where the water gets in.
  2. The failed silicone is cut out without marking the glass or frame.
  3. The joint is cleaned and degreased.
  4. A neutral-cure glazing silicone is applied and tooled.
  5. Each joint is checked and, where possible, water-tested.

How to prepare

  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Mention any leaks or damp you’ve noticed

What affects the quote in Glencoe

The price is agreed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • How many areas need sealing
  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • Access and height
  • Any mould that needs treating

No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. Size, access and the product the joint needs all play a part.

Asking for a quote

What to tell us when you ask for a quote:

  • The address or postcode of the job
  • The problem you’ve noticed
  • The type of property
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is, and add photos by email if you can.

DIY versus a professional finish

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

What the job involves on each surface

Glass-to-glass joints

These joints are on show, so we take care to leave a neat bead.

Rooflights

Rooflight glazing joints are cut out and renewed. If the leak is from the roof around it, a roofer needs to look.

Aftercare tips

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Ventilate the conservatory to cut condensation
  • Wipe the screen down after showering
  • Clear the conservatory gutters regularly
  • Avoid scraping close to the bead

Keep the new joints dry for as long as we advise. After that, clean glass with a mild cleaner.

Drips or damp near a glazing joint shouldn’t be ignored. It may be sealant, or something else and we’ll find out which.

When to call us in Glencoe

Sunlight breaks sealant down, especially on conservatory roofs. It goes brittle, cracks and stops sticking on the glass.

Look out for any of the following:

  • New silicone smeared over old sealant
  • Split or lifting silicone on glass
  • Black or yellowed silicone on glass joints
  • Water running down inside the glass

In and around Glencoe, as anywhere, good glazing silicone starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Before you book anyone

  • What happens if they find a problem under the old sealant
  • How the surfaces are prepared before sealing
  • What product goes in the joint
  • Whether all the old sealant comes out first

Glazing silicone in Glencoe: local notes

Glencoe is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, which means glazing joints and frame seals has to cope with a lot of rain.

In the older streets around Episcopal Church Of St Mary, the windows may be timber, sash or later replacements, and each needs the right sealant against the wall.
