Trusted glazing silicone in Aird

Aird homes and the weather

Aird is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on glazing joints and frame seals, especially on the side facing the sea. Many older homes in Scotland have sash and case windows, and the joint between the box frame and the stone or render is traditionally pointed with sand mastic.

If you let a flat or house near Stranraer station, leaking glazing joints, shower screens or conservatory seals are worth sorting between tenancies. For an older house near a landmark such as Old Parish Church and Burial-ground, frames set in older brick or stone need a sealant that suits the wall as well as the frame.

Glazing silicone for homes and businesses in Aird

We do not replace glass and a misted double-glazed unit needs a glazier. What we do is the silicone around the glass, which is where many leaks start. We’re often asked to deal with mouldy sealant around glass panels and conservatory leaks at frame and glazing joints, across glass-to-glass joints, rooflights and glass balustrade bases.

Mastic can only go onto a dry joint, so outside work in Aird depends on the weather. Tell us about access to all the windows and doors, upstairs included.

Should I try it myself first?

Too much sealant is as bad as too little. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.

What affects the cost of glazing silicone

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • The product the joint needs
  • The number of rooms or windows
  • Any mould that needs treating
  • The old material and how stubborn it is

No two jobs are quite the same, so each one gets its own quote. The number of joints, how easy they are to reach and the sealant needed all make a difference.

Helping us quote

What to tell us when you ask for a quote:

  • If someone has resealed it before
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • A few pictures by email, if you can

We do not publish a price list, because every job is different. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To get started, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Keeping the joints in good condition

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Don’t use a blade near the sealant
  • Use gentle products around the joints
  • Use a gentle glass cleaner and a soft cloth
  • Get a new leak looked at quickly

Follow the cure time we give you before the joints get wet so the silicone can set properly. After that, clean glass with a mild cleaner.

Damp patches, drips and condensation along a joint are worth checking. The cause may be sealant or another part and we will find out which.

Why act early in Aird

You don’t need new glazing because the sealant has gone. Sound glass and frames normally just need resealing, and we’ll tell you if that is not the case. In a place like Aird, small leaks are easy to put off, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.

Leaving a failed joint normally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you’re unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

Glass-to-glass joints

Where two panes meet, the silicone joint takes all the movement. The bead needs to be tidy and fully bonded.

Shower screens

Most shower screen leaks come from the wall or tray joint. We reseal both with anti-fungal silicone.

What we cannot put right

It helps to know what we can’t do:

  • Structural problems with a conservatory roof
  • A frame that needs repairing or replacing
  • Glass that needs replacing

If in doubt, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will say what we think.

Your questions about glazing silicone in Aird

Is glazing silicone in a coastal place like Aird any different?

Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.

Will you come out to Aird?

Yes. Aird is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is a special sealant needed for glass?

Glass needs a sealant made for glazing. We use neutral-cure glazing silicone with anti-fungal products in bathrooms.

Will you leave a mess?

Very little: the area around the joints is protected first, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.

Can you reseal the base of a glass balustrade?

Yes. The old sealant is removed and the joint resealed using a sealant that suits the materials.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Just list everything you need.

Can you match the sealant colour?

We help you choose a colour that suits. The choice depends on the product the joint needs.

Can you work on commercial sites?

Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages.

The process

We work through the job in order: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. For most jobs that takes a few hours for most jobs and we leave things clean and tidy. For a place like Aird, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First, we check where the water gets in.
  2. The failed silicone is cut out without marking the glass or frame.
  3. The joint is cleaned and degreased.
  4. We lay the new bead and tool it smooth.
  5. We check the finished joints and test with water where it’s safe.

Before we arrive

  • For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Move anything stored near the joints

How to get a quote

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and add pictures by email if you can.
