How the visit works
Most of a good job is in the preparation, so that is where we spend the time. Joints are cleaned back and dried before anything new goes in. In total, it usually takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. In a small place like Shover's Green, access is usually the main thing to plan. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- Each joint is checked and the colour of the new sealant agreed.
- We take out the old sealant until the faces are sound.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- We prime the faces where required.
- We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us about any water getting in
- Tell us if parking is tricky
- Clear the area around the work

External mastic in Shover's Green
As ARBOMaster approved applicators, we choose exterior sealants to suit the joint and the surfaces. Some surfaces need a primer before sealing and we use one wherever it does. We work on render & cladding joints, brickwork movement joints and joints between brick and frames, and common reasons people get in touch are weeds or debris growing in open joints and joints where the bead has come unstuck.
Somewhere as small as Shover's Green, homes and farm buildings often face open ground, so walls and rooflines take the full force of wind and rain. Joints on those walls need a sealant that moves with the building and stays in place.
A 12-month guarantee comes as standard, so you are covered after we have gone.

What we can’t put right
To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:
- Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
- Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
If in doubt, phone 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will say what we think.

FAQs for Shover's Green
Will you come out to Shover's Green?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Do you work for landlords with property near Stonegate station?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can go on one quote. You can ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email with the details for a clear quote.
Will there be a smell?
Some sealants have a smell while they cure. Opening a window helps.
How do you reach high-level joints?
It depends on the height and the site. Ground-floor joints are simple; for higher ones, send details and we’ll confirm the access.
How often do external joints need resealing?
There’s no fixed answer: joints on exposed walls or with a lot of movement age sooner. Check them each year and reseal when they split or harden. Our work comes with a 12-month guarantee.
Will you leave a mess?
No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.
What is a movement joint?
Walls move with heat, cold and moisture, so long walls have planned gaps to take that movement. It’s closed with backing rod and a flexible sealant.
How long does the job take?
Typically it takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. Bigger jobs take longer, and we’ll tell you how long to expect.
Different surfaces, different methods
Render joints
Rendered walls have joints at beads, openings and changes of material. We reseal them with a flexible exterior sealant that suits the render colour.
Brickwork movement joints
Vertical joints in long brick walls let the brickwork expand without cracking. We reseal them with a low-modulus sealant over backing rod.
What happens if it’s left?
Running new sealant over the old bead rarely lasts. The new layer cannot bond properly to old, weathered material, so we always take the old sealant out. Where a wall is exposed, as many are in small places like Shover's Green, wind-driven rain gets into any failed joint, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

External mastic in Shover's Green: local notes
London and the South East are among the drier parts of the UK, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day. Historic houses like Wadhurst Castle (about 1.6 miles north-west) are a reminder that the area around Shover's Green has older buildings as well as new. Where a home is older, older brick and stone need a sealant that suits them, at the right joint depth.
Managing a site like Uplands Community College? Then movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s. Rented homes near Stonegate station change hands often, and outside joints that have cracked can let damp into a rental, so check them between lets.

What affects the cost of external mastic
Your quote is based on your job. We look at:
- The type of sealant required
- The old material and how stubborn it is
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- Whether the work is at height
What it costs depends on how much there is to do, how much old material has to come out and access to the work. We give a clear quote before any work starts.
Helping us quote
There’s no need for technical detail. Just tell us:
- If someone has resealed it before
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
- Photos by email, if that’s easy
- The address or postcode of the job
A good description makes for an accurate quote. Let us know the location, the problem and roughly how many joints, and email photos if that’s easy.

DIY sealant or a professional job?
Some jobs are best left to a professional: high-level joints, fire-rated gaps, external movement joints and big jobs call for the right materials, safe access and experience.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.
Do you need external mastic in Shover's Green?
Using the wrong sealant is another common reason. A stiff, general-purpose sealant cannot cope with a joint that moves a lot, so it pulls away from the edges.
It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:
- Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
- Joints where the bead has come unstuck
- Old sealant gone brittle and cracked
- Plants rooting in failed movement joints
In the older streets around Shover's Green Baptist Chapel, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.
