About our external mastic in Shader
Getting the depth right is half the job. Backing rod controls how deep the sealant goes and keeps it off the back of the joint, leaving it bonded to two faces so it can move with the wall. Typical jobs include failed seals between different materials and rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint, on façade panels, joints between brick and frames and brickwork movement joints.
Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering.
The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.

What the job involves on each surface
Joints between dissimilar materials
Wherever two materials meet, they move differently. A flexible sealant bridges the two so the movement is taken up.
Cladding and façade panels
Panels heat up and cool down quickly, so the joint sealant has to cope with frequent movement. We choose the product to suit.

What affects the cost of external mastic
The quote reflects the job in front of us. We take into account:
- Any working-time requirements on site
- Whether there’s mould to deal with
- How easy the joints are to reach
- Which sealant suits the joint
The cost reflects the work involved, not guesswork. That is why we ask about the job first and give you a clear quote before any work starts.
Helping us quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:
- How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
- The type of property
- The address or postcode of the job
- The problem you’ve noticed
A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is.
Looking after it afterwards
So the new joints stay in good condition:
- Keep water from gutters off the wall
- Keep soil, plants and ivy away from the joints
- Look over the joints every year, ideally after winter
- Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
Have a quick look at the joints each spring. Splits, gaps at the edges or plants in the joint are early warning signs.
Act while the splits are small. At that stage it’s a simple cut out and reseal.

What external mastic looks like in Shader
Shader is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Island weather, with its wind and salt spray, is tough on movement joints and outside wall joints.
Whether the job is in Shader itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. Around Shader, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Shader questions
Will you come out to Shader?
Yes. Shader is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across all of Scotland, including the islands, where work is planned around ferry crossings. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Does the coastal weather in Shader affect outside sealant?
Near the coast, wind-driven rain and, nearer the shore, salt air make outside sealant work harder. Choosing the right sealant for the frame and wall, laid at the right depth, helps it last.
What is a movement joint?
Most straight vertical gaps in brickwork are movement joints. It gives the wall room to move.
Does someone need to be in?
We need access to the joints, so we will agree that with you when we book. Indoors, that usually means someone at home.
Do you take out the old sealant first?
Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before applying anything new.
What is backing rod for?
Backing rod controls the sealant depth and keeps it off the back of the joint. That way it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch.
What sealant do you use?
Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, chosen to suit the joint. We explain the product when we quote.
I rent my home. Can I book you?
Yes. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.
Can I do it myself?
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
What we do, step by step
Every visit runs the same way: we check the joints, protect the area around them, carry out the job and tidy away. Most jobs take anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Somewhere like Shader may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- We look at every joint and agree a colour to suit the wall.
- We take out the old sealant until the faces are sound.
- Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
- We prime the faces where required.
- We gun in low-modulus sealant and tool it neatly.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear the area around the work
- Mention any tricky access
- Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
How to get a quote
Getting a quote is simple: let us know the job and the location, and roughly how big it is. Photos by email help us understand the job.

What sealant work can’t fix
We’d rather tell you now than do work that will not last, so these are the limits:
- Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
- Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
- Damp that is not coming from the joint
If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.
