Russland External Mastic
Sealing brickwork movement joints, render, cladding and façade joints for householders, landlords and businesses in Russland. ARBOMaster approved applicators, fully insured, with a one-year guarantee.
- Joints where the bead has come unstuck
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
- Water getting into walls through failed joints
How we handle external mastic in Russland
Where two different materials meet, such as brick and render or blockwork and metal, they move at different rates. A flexible exterior sealant takes up that movement. We work on façade panels, brickwork movement joints and joints between brick and frames, and the jobs we see most are cracked joints where brick meets render or frames and leaking joints around cladding and façade panels.
Across smaller places in Scotland, stone and harled cottages, farm buildings and newer houses often stand exposed to wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints take a battering, so they need a sealant that moves with the building.
We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.

Russland buildings and the weather
Russland is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. Both are hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.
Historic houses such as Skaill House, about 4.2 miles west, show how far back building around Russland goes.
Russland is about 10 miles north-west of Kirkwall, in the Orkney Islands. From the centre of Russland to the outskirts, external mastic is available for homes and businesses alike, from flats and houses to offices and hotels. Our area takes in 51 places across the Orkney Islands, from the larger towns to small villages.
All of KW17 is covered for external mastic, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Close by, we work in Hourston (1 mile north), Harray (1 mile east), Bimbister (2 miles south-east), Tenston (2 miles south-west) and Dounby (2 miles north). If you are somewhere remote, the job takes a little more planning.

What sealant work cannot fix
New sealant can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:
- Structural movement, which needs a surveyor or engineer
- Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
- Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.
What we seal
- Concrete & block
- Façade panels
- Brickwork movement joints
- Joints between brick and frames

Quotes for external mastic in Russland
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- The number of rooms or windows
- Which sealant suits the joint
- Mould in or behind the old joints
- Any working-time requirements on site
Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller. If you’re unsure, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk for an honest opinion and a quote.
Helping us quote
What to tell us when you ask for a quote:
- The problem you’ve noticed
- Any access issues, like height or stairs
- Any previous sealing or DIY work
- Where the job is, and your postcode
To get a quote, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk with the location and a short description of the problem. You will have a clear quote before we start.
DIY sealant or a professional job?
Not every job suits DIY: work at height, external movement joints, fire-rated sealant and large areas need the right product, the right access and the right method.
What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, and the work is guaranteed for a year.
Do you need external mastic in Russland?
Sunlight, wet weather and frost wear exterior sealant down. Over the years it hardens, cracks on the surface and loses its give, so the next time the wall moves, it splits or pulls away.
Look out for these signs:
- Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
- Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
- Panel joints letting water in
- Weathered mastic that no longer stretches
In and around Russland, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Why it’s worth doing now in Russland
It often makes sense to reseal all the failing joints on an elevation together. They’ve weathered the same way. Around Russland, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.
Homes and businesses are quoted the same way: the amount of work, the access and the products needed. Ask us for a quote and we will explain what it covers.
Why us?
- More than 20 years in sealant work
- White, clear, grey or another colour, product permitting
- 4.9 on Google from 180+ five-star reviews

How the visit works
When we get to you, we check the joints match what you told us. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building. Outdoor work around Russland depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so external jobs may need to move if the day turns wet. Work indoors isn’t affected.
- We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
- We cut out the old mastic and rake out anything in the joint.
- The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
- We fit closed-cell backing rod to control the depth.
- The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks
- Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
- Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit

Advice
Surface by surface
Joints between dissimilar materials
Joints where frames, sills or panels meet the wall are common leak points. We cut out the old sealant and reseal with a product suited to both surfaces.
Render joints
Render has movement joints and stop beads that need sealing. We reseal them with a flexible exterior sealant that suits the render colour.
