Common questions in Peterculter

Do you cover smaller places like Peterculter?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is external mastic in Peterculter guaranteed?

All our work, in Peterculter and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.

What colours does the sealant come in?

Exterior sealants are made in a range of colours, from greys and browns to whites and stone shades. We choose the closest to your brick or render.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. ARBOMaster is the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants, and we are part of it.

Can you seal joints between render and window frames?

Yes. Joints between dissimilar materials are a big part of external work. We use a flexible sealant suited to both surfaces.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint.

Do I have to be there?

For indoor joints, yes, someone needs to let us in. Once we have agreed the job, you don’t need to watch us work.

Is it worth trying it myself?

Some simple jobs can be done by a careful DIYer. Most DIY failures come from sealing over old material, wet joints or too much sealant.

External mastic for homes and businesses in Peterculter

Where two different materials meet, such as brick and render or blockwork and metal, they move at different rates. A flexible exterior sealant takes up that movement where mortar or filler would crack. If you have movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant and rigid filler in a joint that should flex, we can put it right, whatever the surface.

Stone walls need a stone-friendly sealant, as acetoxy products can attack some stone. Newer houses need their movement joints and roofline trims kept sound.

Your job is guaranteed for a year, as with all our work.

Should I try it myself first?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A heavy bead looks messy and copes badly with movement, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Do you need external mastic in Peterculter?

Poor preparation causes many early failures: joint faces that were dusty or damp, unprimed where they needed it, or still carrying old sealant. The sealant never bonds properly.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
  • Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels
  • Movement joints with cracked, split or missing sealant
  • Movement joints filled with mortar instead of sealant

If you look after a building such as Culter School, movement joints, cladding joints and gutters on larger buildings need the same care as a house’s.

Honest limits

It helps to know what we cannot do:

  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall
  • Structural movement, which needs a surveyor or engineer
  • Walls that need new movement joints cut into them

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

Surfaces we seal

  • Concrete & block
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Copings & trims
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Façade panels

How it works

When we get to you, we check the joints match what you told us. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. Somewhere like Peterculter may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. We look at every joint and agree a colour to suit the wall.
  2. We take out the old sealant until the faces are sound.
  3. Closed-cell backing rod is pushed in so the sealant bonds to two sides only.
  4. Primer is applied wherever the sealant needs it.
  5. A low-modulus exterior sealant is gunned in and tooled to a neat finish.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Tell us about any previous sealing or DIY attempts
  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work

What external mastic looks like in Peterculter

Aberdeen’s nickname, the Granite City, comes from its stone buildings, and granite is hard and dense, so any sealant against it needs clean, sound edges to grip. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.

For an older house near a landmark such as Kelman Memorial Church, older walls, gutters and the joints where extensions meet them need a flexible sealant.

Surface by surface

Copings and trims

Copings expand and contract through the day, so a flexible sealant suits them best.

Cladding and façade panels

If the façade has a specified sealant, that’s what we use or an approved alternative. Send us any details you have about the façade.

What happens if it’s left?

Running new sealant over the old bead rarely lasts. The new layer cannot bond properly to old, weathered material, so the old joint is cut out fully first. In an older home around Peterculter, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the sealant.

The cost reflects the work involved, not guesswork. That is why we ask a few questions first.
