Aftercare tips

Simple care keeps the joints in good condition. Our advice:

  • Fix overflowing gutters above sealed joints
  • Show decorators and builders where the movement joints are
  • Act on the first splits you see
  • Check external joints each spring

Don’t paint over the new sealant unless we’ve said the product is paintable. Many exterior sealants aren’t designed to be painted, and paint can crack as the joint moves.

If you can see gaps, plants or bare sections in a joint, have it checked. Earlier resealing means a smaller job and a better result.

External mastic in Lovedean

External mastic is a job where short cuts show quickly. Overfilled joints, missing backing rod and sealant laid over old sealant rarely last long. We strip the joint back and start again. If you’re dealing with old sealant gone brittle and cracked and leaking joints around cladding and façade panels, we can put it right, whatever the surface.

In a village or hamlet like Lovedean, older cottages and farm buildings often stand in the open, so walls and rooflines take the full force of wind and rain. Gutter joints and wall joints there need a sealant that can flex and stay put.

We guarantee the work for a year. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we’ll sort it.

Honest limits

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant won’t do:

  • Cracked brickwork or render that needs a builder or plasterer
  • Render that is blown, hollow or coming away
  • Movement that’s more than a sealant joint can take

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.

What we seal

  • Concrete & block
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Façade panels
  • Copings & trims
  • Joints between brick and frames

The process

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point us to the joints and we’ll get on with it. The job generally takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building, including the tidy-up. In a small place like Lovedean, access is normally the main thing to plan. If the job is outside, mention outbuildings, exposed walls and how to reach them.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. We cut out the old mastic and rake out anything in the joint.
  3. The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
  4. Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
  5. We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets and children clear of the area while we work
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Let us know about parking restrictions

What we are called out for in Lovedean

Some movement joints have been pointed up with mortar by mistake. The joint cannot move, so the wall cracks somewhere else instead.

People normally contact us when they notice one of these:

  • Plants rooting in failed movement joints
  • Joints where the bead has come unstuck
  • Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
  • Leaking joints around cladding and façade panels

If you let a flat or house near Rowlands Castle station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • How much experience the applicator has
  • What the quote includes, VAT included or not
  • When the joint can take water or movement

Our hiring checklist

External mastic in Lovedean: local notes

Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.

If you look after a building such as Woodcroft Primary, its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.

Leave it or put it right?

Water gets in through a failed movement joint, behind render and cladding. Dealing with it early keeps the repair to the joint, rather than the wall around it. In a small place like Lovedean, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Combining jobs into one visit generally makes better use of the time than several visits, so tell us about everything that needs sealing. We will send you a clear quote for the lot.

Questions from Lovedean

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Rowlands Castle station?

Yes, we work for landlords and agents. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or email us and tell us about the property, and we’ll give you a clear quote.

Do you cover Lovedean for external mastic?

Yes. Our work covers London and the South East, and Lovedean is part of that. You can call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and tell us what needs doing, and we will send you a clear quote.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. We’re approved under the ARBOMaster scheme, which is run for the Arbo sealant brand.

How long does external mastic last?

That depends on the wall, the weather and the movement. Look for splits, hardening or edges coming away, and reseal at that point.

Will you leave a mess?

No. We protect the surfaces around the joints, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.

Can you seal joints between two different materials?

Yes. Joints between dissimilar materials are a big part of external work. We use a flexible sealant suited to both surfaces with primer where required.

Does someone need to be in?

We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. Indoors, that usually means someone at home.

What do you put in the joint?

Quality sealants from brands including Arbo and Everbuild, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Should I try it myself first?

What a professional job adds is preparation and the right product. We take joints back to clean, dry surfaces, and the sealant is matched to the joint and its conditions, then guaranteed for a year.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.
