External mastic near Hurstpierpoint

Different surfaces, different methods

Concrete and blockwork

Blockwork and concrete shrink over time and move with the seasons. Their movement joints are sealed over backing rod with a flexible sealant.

Render joints

Render is weaker at the surface than brick, so a low-modulus sealant is kinder to the joint edges. Priming is done where the sealant calls for it.

How we handle external mastic in Hurstpierpoint

Low-level joints can normally be done from the ground. For joints higher up, give us some details of the building and we will confirm what access is needed. We work on render & cladding joints, copings & trims and joints between brick and frames, and the jobs we see most are failed sealant between panels on a façade and plants rooting in failed movement joints.

Homes around Hurstpierpoint range from older cottages to newer houses, with walls and rooflines of every type. Older homes need their gutter and trim joints kept tight, newer ones their movement joints.

What sealant work can’t fix

In fairness, some problems need a different trade:

  • Cracks in the bricks or render themselves, away from the joints
  • Walls that need new movement joints cut into them
  • Rising or penetrating damp from elsewhere in the wall

If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 464 0079 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

Common questions in Hurstpierpoint

Do you cover smaller places like Hurstpierpoint?

Yes, Hurstpierpoint is covered. We work across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Hassocks station?

Yes, we work for landlords and letting agents. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and tell us about the property, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Do you seal joints where cladding meets other materials?

Yes. Joints between dissimilar materials are a big part of external work. The sealant is chosen to bond to both sides with primer where required.

Do I need to be at home?

We need access to the joints, so we’ll agree that with you when we book. Indoors, that normally means someone at home.

Where are you based?

Our base is Crawley. We work across South East England, London and Scotland.

Will the new joint stand out?

The sealant colour is picked to suit the wall. There’s a wide choice of exterior colours.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Mr Mastic is fully insured, and we have been doing sealant work for more than 20 years.

What do you put in the joint?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, picked for each joint. We explain the product when we quote.

Aftercare tips

So the new joints stay in good condition:

  • Clear growth from the base of walls and joints
  • Leave the joints unpainted unless we’ve said otherwise
  • Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints
  • Show decorators and builders where the movement joints are

Keep the joints clear of soil, plants and climbing growth. Damp material against the sealant shortens its life.

Small splits are the time to act. At that stage it’s a simple cut out and reseal before water has had years to get in.

External mastic in Hurstpierpoint: local notes

Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, but outside sealant still needs a dry, clean surface, so outdoor work is planned around the forecast.

In the older streets around Hurstpierpoint Baptist Church, old and new materials meet at the roofline and walls, which is where sealant earns its keep. For landlords with property near Hassocks station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside. Schools such as St Lawrence CofE Primary School are buildings too, and its movement joints, gutters and trims need looking after like any other building’s.

What we do, step by step

When we get to you, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. After that, the work takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. Parking around Hurstpierpoint is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention any lanes, gates or long drives. If the job is outside, tell us about side access and how high the joints are.

  1. First, the joints are inspected and the access agreed.
  2. We cut out the old mastic and rake out anything in the joint.
  3. The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
  4. Backing rod sized to the joint goes in to set the depth.
  5. The exterior sealant is applied, tooled and checked along its length.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear the area around the work
  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • Mention any tricky access

Advice

What affects the cost of external mastic

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • How much there is to do
  • When we can work, for business premises

Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller, as water and mould keep getting in. If you are unsure, ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email for an honest opinion and a quote.

Asking for a quote

When you call or email, it’s useful to know:

  • Whether it’s a home or a business
  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work

We quote each job on its own. Simply ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and describe the job and send pictures if you have them.

Should I try it myself first?

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old material has to come out first.

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.
