External & façade joints in Hillswick, Shetland Islands

We cover Hillswick for sealing brickwork movement joints, render, cladding and façade joints. Old sealant removed completely, joints prepared properly.

  • Rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint
  • Hard, crazed mastic that has stopped moving
  • Gaps where render, brick and frames meet

External mastic in Hillswick

External mastic in Hillswick, done properly

Failed sealant is cut out, the depth set with closed-cell backing rod, and the joint resealed with a low-modulus sealant made for outside. We pick a colour that sits well with the wall. If you’re dealing with cracked joints where brick meets render or frames and moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left, we can help.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Hillswick depends on the weather, and longer journeys are planned in advance. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, in Hillswick and everywhere else we cover.

  • Subsidence or other structural problems
  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering

If you are not sure, just send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Hillswick questions

Is Hillswick in your area for external mastic?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Hillswick is part of that. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Will you come out to Hillswick?

Yes, Hillswick is covered. We work across all of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes, every time. New silicone does not stick to old silicone, so the joint is cleaned back first.

What should I tell you?

Tell us what needs doing and where, with pictures by email if possible. We will ask anything else we need to know.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No. We remove every bit of old sealant first, so the new joint bonds to clean surfaces.

Do I need to be at home?

If the work is inside, we need someone to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.

Do the sealants smell?

Possibly a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures.

How long will you be here?

As a guide, most jobs take a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation. Larger jobs naturally take longer, and we’ll tell you how long to expect.

Do you need external mastic in Hillswick?

If plants are growing out of a joint, the sealant has generally failed or was never there. Roots and dirt hold water against the wall and speed up the damage.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Joints pointed up with cement by mistake
  • Joints with sealant missing in places
  • Rain getting behind render or cladding at a joint
  • Plants rooting in failed movement joints

If you live in an older home near Northmavine Parish Church and Churchyard, the joints between older walls, newer extensions and the roofline need a sealant that can move.

Choosing a sealant specialist

The process

We work through the job in order: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. Typically it takes a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access and we leave things clean and tidy. For a place like Hillswick, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.

  1. First we look over the joints with you, agree which to renew and talk through access.
  2. We cut out the failed sealant and rake out any dirt or growth.
  3. We clean both faces of the joint and prime them where the product calls for it.
  4. Backing rod goes in next, setting the depth and keeping the sealant off the back of the joint.
  5. The new sealant, chosen to suit the brick or render, is applied and tooled to a neat finish.

Before we arrive

  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • Try not to wet indoor joints just before the visit
  • Let us know if you’ve seen damp or leaks

Walls and rooflines in Hillswick

Hillswick is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That’s hard on movement joints and outside wall joints, especially on the side facing the sea. Plenty of Scottish homes have harled walls, and joints where harling meets other materials need a sealant that can grip and flex.

In and around Hillswick, as anywhere, good external mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Hillswick is in the Shetland Islands. Across the ZE2 area, our applicators can take on external mastic. Across the Shetland Islands, we cover 63 places, Hillswick among them.

Every address in ZE2 is covered for external mastic. If you’re just outside Hillswick, we cover Urafirth (1 mile north-east), Braehoulland (3 miles north-west), Hogaland (4 miles east), Sullom (5 miles south-east) and Ollaberry (5 miles east). Quotes for external mastic in Hillswick

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • The product the joint needs
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove
  • Any working-time requirements on site

What you pay reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we ask a few questions first and give you a clear quote before work begins.

What to tell us for a quote

Photos help, but a description is a good start. Please mention:

  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • Any access issues, like height or stairs
  • Where the job is, and your postcode
  • Whether it has been sealed before

There’s no standard price list, as no two jobs are quite the same. Instead, your job gets its own clear quote. To arrange one, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

How to look after the new joints

Good habits help new joints last longer. A few tips:

  • Point out the joints to other trades
  • Wash walls gently around the sealant
  • Deal with leaking gutters that soak the joints below
  • Keep movement joints as flexible joints, not mortar

Make sure anyone working on the wall later knows where the movement joints are. They must stay as flexible joints, never rendered or pointed over.

A joint that has stopped moving pushes the movement elsewhere, generally as cracking in the brickwork or render nearby. Resealing it early helps prevent that.

What the job involves on each surface

Cladding and façade panels

If the façade has a specified sealant, that’s what we use, or one the system allows. Tell us what the building has when you get in touch.

Copings and trims

A failed coping joint lets water into the top of the wall. Resealing them is a small job that protects a lot.

Why act early in Hillswick

Pointing a movement joint with mortar might seem a neat fix, but it stops the joint moving. The wall then cracks somewhere else. The correct repair is a flexible sealant with the right backing. Exposed walls in smaller Scottish places take a lot of wind and rain, and damp in stone or harled walls takes a long time to dry once water gets behind a joint.

A failed joint rarely gets cheaper to fix by waiting, because water and mould keep working on it. If you are unsure, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll give you an honest view and a quote.
