Getting the depth right is half the job. Closed-cell backing rod sets the depth and stops the sealant sticking to the back, so it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch. We work on render & cladding joints, copings & trims and brickwork movement joints, and people most often call us about joints where the bead has come unstuck and failed sealant between panels on a façade.

Outside joints can only be sealed when they’re dry, so work in Haywood depends on the weather. Let us know about access to every wall and roofline.

Each job carries a 12-month guarantee.

How to look after the new joints

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Walk round the building once a year and look at the joints
  • Make sure movement joints are not pointed over
  • Clear growth from the base of walls and joints
  • Avoid pressure-washing directly into sealant joints

Make sure anyone working on the wall later knows where the movement joints are. They should be kept open and resealed, not filled.

Act while the splits are small. At that stage it’s a simple cut out and reseal with no damage behind it to deal with.

Walls and rooflines in Haywood

Private landlords in Scotland must meet the Repairing Standard, which includes keeping a home wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that. Harled (roughcast) walls are common in Scotland, and where harling meets frames, pipes and other materials, the joint needs a flexible sealant that grips a rough surface.

If you let a flat or house near Breich station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside.

How the job changes by surface

Concrete and blockwork

Wide joints in concrete need the depth controlling carefully. Backing rod sized to the joint sets it and keep the sealant to the right depth.

Brickwork movement joints

Brick movement joints are often mistaken for a missing mortar line. Where one has been mortared, we cut it out and reseal it with sealant.

Why deal with it now?

Water gets in through a failed movement joint. Resealing early keeps the job to the joint itself, instead of the wall and finishes around it. Around Haywood, water from a failed joint in an older stone home can soak into timber and plaster.

A few things move the cost up or down: how much old sealant there is and how stubborn it is, any mould to treat, and whether we need extra access for height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

Why us?

  • Anti-fungal silicone where joints get wet
  • A sealant colour to suit the surroundings
  • ARBOMaster approved applicator
  • Old sealant always removed completely

Common questions in Haywood

Is Haywood in your area for external mastic?

Yes, Haywood is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and let us know what needs doing.

Is Haywood within the area you cover?

Yes. Haywood is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Is there any odour?

There can be a smell while the sealant cures, but it fades. Ventilation helps.

Do you work for hotels and businesses?

Yes. We can plan bigger jobs in stages to suit the site.

Which products do you use?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice, and we will explain our choice.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Always. Sealing over the old bead is the commonest cause of early failure, and it’s something we never do.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Many landlords are glad to have it sorted.

Should I point up the gap in my brickwork?

No, not where the gap is a movement joint. Filling it with mortar defeats its purpose. We’ll reseal it with a flexible sealant.

How the visit works

There’s no need to move everything out, just the space around the work. Everything nearby is protected, and the work takes anything from a few hours to several days, depending on the building for a typical job. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Let us know how to find you and how to reach the joints.

  1. We start by checking each joint, agreeing the ones to redo and how we’ll reach them.
  2. We cut out the failed sealant and rake out any dirt or growth.
  3. The joint faces are cleaned and primed where the sealant needs it.
  4. We push in closed-cell backing rod so the sealant is the right depth and bonds to the sides only.
  5. A flexible exterior sealant is applied and tooled in a colour to suit the wall.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • Mention if the joints have been sealed before
  • On commercial sites, let us know about site rules

What sealant work cannot fix

Honest advice matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what new sealant won’t do:

  • Movement that is more than a sealant joint can take
  • Cutting new joints into brickwork, which is building work rather than sealant work
  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course

Not sure which it is? You can send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Brickwork movement joints
  • Façade panels
  • Joints between brick and frames
  • Copings & trims
  • Render & cladding joints
  • Concrete & block

Common problems we fix in Haywood

Buildings move more than people expect. Clay bricks expand slightly over their life, concrete and block shrink, and everything moves with temperature and wet. The sealant in the movement joints takes that strain.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Sealant that has lost its bond to the brick or render
  • Moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left
  • Rigid filler in a joint that should flex
  • Water getting into walls through failed joints

Around Haywood, as everywhere, external mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.
