External & façade joints in East Anton, Hampshire

  • Damp patches traced to an open external joint

Need external mastic in East Anton?

Signs you need external mastic in East Anton

The wrong product in a moving joint is a classic cause. A stiff, general-purpose sealant can’t cope with a joint that moves a lot, and it tears off the sides.

It’s worth asking for a quote if you see:

  • Moss and dirt in joints with no sealant left
  • Joints where the bead has come unstuck
  • Failed sealant between panels on a façade
  • Old sealant gone brittle and cracked

External mastic for homes and businesses in East Anton

A movement joint is only as good as its depth. Backing rod controls how deep the sealant goes and keeps it off the back of the joint, so it bonds to the two sides only and can stretch. We work on render & cladding joints, copings & trims and concrete & block, and people most often call us about movement joints filled with mortar instead of sealant and panel joints letting water in.

Outbuildings, garages and conservatories around homes in places like East Anton add more joints to look after. Gutter ends, garage door frames and the joints where an extension meets the house are typical spots for leaks.

Leave it or put it right?

An open joint keeps letting water into the wall with every downpour. In cold weather, frost can damage wet brick and render around the joint, so the problem grows beyond the joint itself. In a smaller place like East Anton, wherever a wall is exposed, a failed outside joint is a real source of damp. Indoors, a failed seal lets water into floors and panels as it would anywhere.

Combining jobs into one visit normally makes better use of the time than several visits, so it’s worth mentioning everything you’d like done. We’ll give you a clear quote for the lot.

Walls and rooflines in East Anton

Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.

If you let a flat or house near Andover station, split movement joints are easy to miss on a rental until damp shows inside. For an older house near a landmark such as St Paul Church Centre, an extension built onto an older house moves differently, and the joint between them takes the strain.

East Anton questions

Can you help a landlord with a rental near Andover station?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for, and several properties can be quoted together. Just phone 0345 464 0079 or email us with the address and what needs doing, and we will give you a clear price.

Do you cover smaller places like East Anton?

Yes, we do. Our work covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

How long will you be here?

That depends on how much there is to do, but most jobs take a few hours to a few days, depending on the length of joint and the access. We will tell you when we quote.

Will you leave a mess?

Not at all. We work neatly, protect the area around the joints and tidy up afterwards.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We are fully insured, with over 20 years’ experience in sealant work.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint before resealing.

Do the sealants smell?

Sometimes, a little. It fades as the sealant cures, and ventilation helps.

How long should I leave it?

Cure times vary by product and the temperature. We tell you how long to leave it before we go.

What affects the quote in East Anton

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • How easy the joints are to reach
  • Any working-time requirements on site
  • The product the joint needs
  • How much old sealant there is and how hard it is to remove

There are no prices on our website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a quick quote and we’ll talk you through it.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The type of property
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved
  • If someone has resealed it before
  • Photos by email, if that is easy

Getting a quote is simple: tell us what needs doing and where, and roughly how big it is. A few photos by email make the job easier to understand, and we will come back to you with a quote.

What sealant work cannot fix

New sealant cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not solve:

  • Loose or hollow render, which needs re-rendering
  • Damp from another source, such as a leaking gutter or a bridged damp-proof course
  • Subsidence or other structural problems

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will tell you honestly.

DIY versus a professional finish

A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

How it works

There’s no need to move everything out before we come, only the area right around the joints. We protect the rest, and the job takes a few hours for a handful of joints, longer for a whole elevation in most cases. A visit to East Anton is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. If the work is outside, the weather plays a part, as sealant needs a dry surface.

  1. We start by walking round the building and agreeing the joints and the access.
  2. We cut out the old mastic and rake out anything in the joint.
  3. The faces are brushed clean and primed where the product requires it.
  4. We fit closed-cell backing rod to control the depth.
  5. We apply the sealant, tool it and check the whole run.

How to prepare

  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Clear items away from the joints we are working on

Keeping the joints in good condition

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Make sure movement joints are not pointed over
  • Keep water from gutters off the wall
  • Leave the joints unpainted unless we’ve said otherwise
  • Wash walls gently around the sealant

Give the sealant the cure time we tell you before anything rubs against it. Most exterior sealants skin fast but take longer to cure right through.

Once a joint can’t move, the wall finds another way, often as cracks near the joint. Resealing it early helps prevent that.
