Bathroom resealing in Stonehills

Sealant that is mouldy, cracked or peeling shouldn’t be left until there’s a leak. A photo of the joints helps when you call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email, and you’ll get a clear quote before any work starts. We work on baths, kitchen worktops & upstands and basins & vanity units, and common reasons people get in touch are water getting behind the bath panel and a bead that has pulled away from the tiles.

Somewhere as small as Stonehills, homes tend to be cottages, farmhouses or converted buildings, with some newer houses too. Movement in older walls and floors tends to show first as cracked grout or split sealant.

A 12-month guarantee comes as standard.

For landlords and businesses

Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. For commercial premises, we can talk through working times when we quote.

Hotels need rooms back in use, so the work can be planned room by room around your bookings where we can. Hotel work is part of what we do, alongside homes and businesses.

When it isn’t the sealant

New sealant cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. Sealant will not put right:

  • A leaking waste, trap or valve
  • A cracked shower tray or bath (that needs repair or replacement)
  • Movement from a bath with loose feet or no proper support

If in doubt, call 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and we will say what we think before booking.

What we seal

  • Wet rooms
  • Kitchen worktops & upstands
  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Baths
  • Sinks & splashbacks
  • Basins & vanity units

Stonehills homes and their sealant

Stonehills is close to the coast. Coastal homes, holiday lets and guest houses can see heavy bathroom use in busy months, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Most of the South East has hard water, which leaves limescale on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.

If you look after a building such as Fawley Infant School, its toilets, changing areas and kitchens need their sealant renewed like any other building’s. If you let a flat or house near Hamble station, mouldy sealant is one of the first things a new tenant notices, so it’s worth renewing between lets.

Stonehills is about 4 miles south-east of Hythe, in Hampshire. Every kind of property in Stonehills can book us for bathroom resealing. Every job comes with our one-year guarantee. What we do, step by step

Our applicators work methodically: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. Typically it takes half a day or less for one room, longer when the kitchen is included and we leave things clean and tidy. For a village or hamlet like Stonehills, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. Everything for the job comes with us, so a second trip is avoided where possible.

  1. Protection goes down around the bath, shower or worktop.
  2. We cut away the old sealant and clean off what’s left.
  3. Mould is treated, then the joint is left to dry thoroughly.
  4. Baths are filled first, then anti-fungal sanitary silicone is applied in a colour to suit.
  5. The joint is finished neatly and we explain when it can get wet.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Mention any parking rules near the property
  • Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises

Advice

Aftercare tips

How long the joints last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Wait for the cure time we give you
  • Look for lifting corners and small gaps now and then
  • Dry the bead with a towel now and then
  • Use gentle cleaners on the silicone

In a kitchen, don’t let water sit along the back of the worktop and keep hot pans off the bead. A dry joint lasts longer.

A failed kitchen joint is easy to miss. Water gets behind the upstand and into the edge of a laminate worktop, and the board underneath can swell. Resealing before that happens protects the worktop.

DIY sealant or a professional job?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone will not bond to old, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

When to call us in Stonehills

Silicone does not last for ever. Daily water, heat and cleaning products slowly wear it down, and how long it lasts comes down to use, cleaning and ventilation.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • A bead that has pulled away from the tiles
  • Water getting behind the kitchen upstand
  • Lumpy, uneven sealant from a DIY attempt
  • Black mould in the silicone that will not clean off

If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.

What your quote should include

  • How the joint is cleaned and prepared
  • What guarantee comes with the work
  • Whether VAT is included
  • Is the old sealant removed completely?

Choosing a sealant specialist

Different surfaces, different methods

Shower trays & enclosures

If a tray moves underfoot, new silicone won’t last. Movement is checked before anything is resealed, and tell you if it needs re-bedding first.

Baths

Acrylic baths give a little under load, while steel and cast iron baths move less but still settle when full. Filling the bath first allows for that movement.

Common questions in Stonehills

Do you take on hotel work around Stonehills?

Yes, hospitality work, including hotels, is part of what we do. Work can be planned room by room, and out-of-hours working can be arranged.

Do you cover smaller places like Stonehills?

Yes, we do. We work across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

How long before the new sealant can get wet?

Silicone is touch-dry quite quickly, but it takes longer to cure. Leave it around 24 hours before it gets wet, or as long as we advise for that product.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint.

How long does it take to reseal a bath or shower?

A single bath or shower takes about a couple of hours, old sealant removal included. A full bathroom and kitchen can take most of a day.

Do you do kitchens as well as bathrooms?

Yes, often alongside a bathroom. Next to the sink we use a food-safe product where it’s needed.

Can you quote for more than one area?

Of course. Doing several areas at once is usually more efficient, so mention them when you ask for a quote.

Can tenants book the work?

Of course. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.
