Bathroom resealing in Brough

A shower joint gets soaked every day. Tray edges, screen profiles and wet room joints all rely on silicone to stay watertight. They’re resealed with anti-fungal sanitary silicone, finished smooth so water drains away rather than collecting. If you’re dealing with a joint torn by a bath that flexes and water getting behind the bath panel, we can help.

In and around a place like Brough, homes range from older stone-built properties to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

You are covered for a year from the day we finish. If anything is not right with it, send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Mr Mastic applicator sealing the vertical joint between a glass shower screen and tiled wall

DIY versus a professional finish

The difference is mostly in the preparation and the product. Joints are cleaned back to sound surfaces and dried, and the sealant is chosen for how the joint moves and where it is.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, such as a straightforward joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.

When to call us in Brough

Older sealant shrinks and hardens. Along worktops it tends to pull back from the wall, opening a hairline gap that lets water and crumbs in. Heat from the hob and strong sprays speed it along.

People normally contact us when they notice something like this:

  • Water escaping at the shower enclosure
  • A reseal done over the top of the old bead
  • Black mould in the silicone that will not clean off
  • Gaps between the worktop and the wall

Around Brough, as everywhere, bathroom resealing is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How the colour is chosen

  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why

10 questions to ask before booking

Why deal with it now?

A failed joint gets more costly to put right the longer it’s left. Once water is behind the bath, it can reach floorboards, panels and the ceiling underneath, and that’s a far bigger job than a reseal. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

A few things move the cost up or down: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

How the visit works

We bring everything the job needs with us, so you do not need to buy or prepare anything. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take two to three hours for a typical bath, depending on how much old sealant there is. Outside jobs in Brough need a dry day, because sealant won’t bond to a wet joint, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Work indoors isn’t affected.

  1. We look at every joint first and check for movement or leaks.
  2. Every trace of the old bead is removed, including the thin smear on the tiles.
  3. Joints are degreased and any mould is treated.
  4. With the joint dry, and any bath loaded with water, a single bead of anti-fungal silicone is applied.
  5. The bead is tooled smooth and you are told the cure time, normally around 24 hours.

Before we arrive

  • Where the joints are inside, avoid wetting them before we arrive
  • Let us know about parking restrictions
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area

Advice

Keeping the joints in good condition

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. We suggest:

  • Run the extractor fan during and after every shower
  • Wipe up water along the back of the worktop
  • Never pick at the silicone with a blade
  • Wipe the sealant dry after showering

Wipe up standing water along the worktop joint. A dry joint lasts longer.

A split bead lets water through every time the bath or shower is used. Left alone, it soaks into the floor, the wall behind the tiles or the ceiling below. Early resealing closes the gap before damage is done.

What affects the quote in Brough

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • Whether the work is at height
  • The old material and how stubborn it is
  • The type of sealant required

Combining jobs into one visit is generally more efficient than separate visits. We’ll send you a clear quote for the lot.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • Whether it has been sealed before
  • Photos by email, if that is easy
  • How we’d reach the joints
  • How many joints, rooms or windows are involved

Need a quote? Please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details. You’ll know what we plan to do, and what it will cost, before any work begins.

When something else is needed

A few problems are outside what sealant work can do:

  • Cracks in the tray itself rather than the joint
  • Water getting in through the grout rather than the sealant
  • Loose or hollow tiles, or failed tanking behind them

If in doubt, drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Brough: your questions answered

Can you do bathroom resealing in Brough?

Yes. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, and Brough is part of that. You can drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk and tell us what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear price.

Is Brough within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, islands included, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

How long does a bath or shower reseal take?

Allow a couple of hours for a single bath or shower. We’ll confirm how long your job needs when we quote.

Do you hold any approvals?

Yes. Mr Mastic is an ARBOMaster approved applicator, and we’re fully insured.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, we are fully insured.

How long does the new silicone need before I use the shower?

We give you the cure time before we leave, and it’s generally around 24 hours. Using it sooner can damage the bead.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Where the job is, what the problem is and roughly how big it is. If you can, email a few pictures.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes, every time. New sealant will not bond properly to old, so the joint is cleaned back first.

Bathroom resealing around Brough

Brough is close to the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, and sealant and grout that work that hard wear out sooner. Scotland’s water is generally soft, so sealant and grout see less limescale than in much of England. But mould still grows into sealant and grout in a room that does not dry out.

In the older streets around Whalsay Parish Church, bathrooms in older houses have often been refitted more than once, with sealant laid over sealant.
