Window & door mastic in New Forest, Hampshire
Problem with your window and door frames in New Forest? We cut out the old, prepare the joints and apply the right sealant.
- Water coming in at the bottom corners of a door
- Cracked or shrunken mastic around the frame
- Gaps left after new windows were fitted
Common problems we fix in New Forest
Water runs down the glass onto the sill, so the sill ends and the joint below the frame are common leak points. Failed sealant there lets rain into the wall or behind the frame.
Any of these means the joints need attention:
- Cracked internal joints between frame and plaster
- Water coming in at the bottom corners of a door
- Draughts coming in around windows and doors
- Untidy mastic left by window fitters
Around New Forest, as everywhere, window mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

Window mastic for homes and businesses in New Forest
Some gaps around frames are far deeper than they look. Packing it solid with sealant gives a joint that can’t flex, so deep gaps get backing rod first. The sealant then grips the two sides it should. Common call-outs are for rain getting in at the frame or under the sill and gaps between the frame and the inside reveal, across composite doors, uPVC windows and patio & French doors.
Outdoor sealant needs dry, clean surfaces, so work on frames around New Forest is planned for dry weather. Let us know about access to all the frames, upstairs ones included.

When it isn’t the sealant
To be straight with you, some problems need a different trade:
- Misting between the panes of a double-glazed unit (that needs a new unit)
- Broken hinges, locks or handles
- Damp coming through the wall itself rather than the frame joint
If in doubt, call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we’ll say what we think before you book.

DIY versus a professional finish
Sealing over old silicone is the commonest DIY error. New silicone won’t bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.
What the job involves on each surface
Aluminium frames
Aluminium moves with heat, and the frames are often slimmer than uPVC. A neat, narrow bead in a colour to match keeps the clean look.
Window sills
Where a sill meets brick or render, the ends often crack first. A tight seal at each end keeps rain out of the wall.
New Forest homes and the weather
Compared with the north and west, the South East gets less rain, though outdoor sealant still has to go onto a dry joint, so the forecast decides the day.
Homes close to Church of All Saints include some older properties, and replacement windows fitted into old openings often leave uneven gaps that need backing and a flexible joint.

How to look after the new joints
Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Wash the frames with mild soapy water
- Look round the frames every year or so
- Avoid blasting the frames with a pressure washer
- Do not paint over the silicone
Timber frames need their paint kept up, because bare, wet timber moves more and pulls at the joint. Keep paint off the silicone itself.
Draughts get worse, not better. As old mastic keeps shrinking, the gap widens, and heat escapes around the frame. Resealing closes it.
What we do, step by step
All our tools and materials come with us in the van, so there’s nothing for you to buy. Once we’ve agreed what’s being done, the area is protected and the work begins. It normally takes most of a day for a typical house, less for a few frames. In a small place like New Forest, access is usually the main thing to plan. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.
- Each frame is looked over and we agree which ones need resealing.
- We remove the old mastic and clean the frame edge and wall.
- Deep gaps get closed-cell backing rod to set the depth.
- The new sealant goes on in white, brown, anthracite grey, black or clear to suit.
- We tool each bead neatly and check every joint is closed.

Common questions in New Forest
Do you cover smaller places like New Forest?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our work covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Is there a guarantee on window mastic in New Forest?
All our work, in New Forest and everywhere else, comes with a 12-month guarantee. We’re also fully insured and ARBOMaster approved.
Where do you work from?
We work from Crawley. We cover New Forest and the rest of Hampshire.
How long will my window job take?
Allow anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are. Access and the amount of old mastic make the biggest difference.
Is it OK to seal over old sealant?
No. Fresh sealant does not stick to old sealant, and it traps any mould or water underneath. It all has to come out first.
Are you ARBOMaster approved?
Yes. We’re ARBOMaster approved, the scheme for applicators of Arbo sealants.
What should I tell you?
Let us know what needs doing and where, with photos by email if possible. We will ask anything else we need to know.
Can you get sealant to suit coloured frames?
Yes, we choose a colour to suit the frame. Anthracite grey, black, brown and white cover most frames, with clear as an option.
Why deal with it now?
A quick bead over the top of old mastic looks like an easy fix, but it will not grip old, dirty sealant. It soon lifts and the leak carries on behind it. Proper resealing starts with removing the old joint. Older cottages and farmhouses around New Forest can have timber floors and frames, where water from a failed joint can cause rot if it’s left.
We do not show prices on the website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. Call for a quick quote.
