Window & door mastic in Hastoe, Hertfordshire
Problem with your window and door frames in Hastoe? We remove the old material, prepare the joints and seal them properly, with a 12-month guarantee.
- Mastic that has split away from the wall
- Gaps left after new windows were fitted
- Cracked internal joints between frame and plaster
About our window mastic in Hastoe
Behind a thin line of old mastic there’s sometimes a deep void. Packing it solid with sealant gives a joint that can’t flex, so deep gaps get backing rod first. The sealant then grips the two sides it should. Typical jobs include gaps between the frame and the inside reveal and whistling draughts around closed windows, across window sills, aluminium frames and timber windows & doors.
Around Hastoe, many homes face open ground, so their windows and doors take the full weather. Exposed frames and sills lose their mastic sooner than sheltered ones.
There’s a 12-month guarantee on every job, whatever its size.

How the visit works
We bring everything the job needs with us, so you don’t need to buy or prepare anything. Once we have agreed what’s being done, we protect the area and start. Most jobs take anything from an hour or two to a full day, depending on how many frames there are. For a village or hamlet like Hastoe, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. Everything for the job comes with us, so a second trip is avoided where possible.
- Each frame is looked over and we agree which ones need resealing.
- The old mastic is cut out and scraped back to clean surfaces.
- Where the gap is deep, backing rod goes in first.
- A flexible exterior sealant is applied in a colour to suit the frame.
- We tool each bead neatly and check every joint is closed.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move anything stored near the joints
- Mention any sign-in or site rules at work premises
- Let us know about parking restrictions

Advice
How the job changes by surface
Aluminium frames
Metal frames expand in the sun and are often slim, with little room for error. A tidy bead in anthracite grey, black or a matching colour keeps the clean look.
Timber windows & doors
Wood swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it dries, so a flexible sealant is essential. The paint or stain needs to be sound where the sealant meets it.
What sealant work can’t fix
Sealant is not the answer to every problem, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t solve:
- Broken hinges, locks or handles
- A door that needs adjusting, rehanging or new seals
- Rotten timber, which needs a joiner first
Not sure which it is? You can phone 0345 464 0079 or email us and we will tell you honestly.
Surfaces we seal
- Timber windows & doors
- Window sills
- Aluminium frames
- uPVC windows
- Patio & French doors
- Composite doors
Looking after it afterwards
Looking after new joints is easy:
- Use gentle cleaners on frames and sealant
- Keep timber frames painted
- Air rooms to keep condensation down around windows
- Look round the frames every year or so
Check the drainage slots in the frames aren’t blocked, so water can run away instead of sitting against the joint.
Draughts get worse, not better. As old mastic keeps shrinking, the gap widens, and heat escapes around the frame. Resealing closes it.
Window mastic in Hastoe: local notes
With historic houses such as Cholesbury Manor House (about 1.6 miles south-east) nearby, there’s older building stock in the area around Hastoe as well as newer homes. Where a home is older, older frames set in brick or stone need a sealant that suits them, and sometimes that’s traditional sand mastic. Rainfall in the South East is lower than in much of the UK, yet outdoor joints still have to be sealed dry, so jobs are booked with the weather in mind.
Letting a property close to Tring station? Then cracked frame mastic tends to show up as a draught or damp complaint, so it’s worth checking between lets. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Tring School, larger buildings have plenty of frames, and the mastic around each one ages.

Your questions about window mastic in Hastoe
Is Hastoe within the area you cover?
Yes. Hastoe is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can you help a landlord with a rental near Tring station?
Yes, rental work is part of what we do. Just ring 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and tell us about the property, and we will give you a clear quote.
Do you guarantee window mastic?

Do you hold any approvals?
Yes. We hold ARBOMaster approved applicator status, and we’re fully insured.
Will new mastic stop draughts?
Yes, where the draught is at the frame edge. We find where the air is coming from before we reseal.
Do you have sealant for grey or black windows?
Yes. Grey and black frames get grey or black sealant, and wood-effect frames generally suit brown.
What sealant do you use?
Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, chosen to suit the joint. We explain the product when we quote.
Do you work on first-floor windows?
Yes, in most cases. Access is planned before work begins, so mention the height and anything in the way.
Signs you need window mastic in Hastoe
Joints that are too thin or too deep fail early. A skim of sealant over a wide gap soon tears, and a gap filled solid cannot flex. Backing rod sets the right depth.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Mastic that’s falling out in pieces
- Gaps where the sill meets the wall
- A bead that does not match the frame
- Damp patches on the reveal after heavy rain
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Martha (Anglian Methodist), the joint between an old wall and a newer frame is normally the first place rain gets in.
Before you book anyone
- Whether the sealant suits the joint
- Are they insured?
- What guarantee comes with the work
- Whether you can choose the colour
What happens if it’s left?
Failed mastic is not a reason to replace sound windows. Where the frames are sound, new mastic usually deals with draughts and leaks at the edges. Problems with the glass or gaskets are for a window company, and we’ll say so. In a small place like Hastoe, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
What you pay reflects the work, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask about the job first.
