Window mastic in Àird
Over two decades of sealing frames has taught us which products suit which walls. We are fully insured ARBOMaster approved applicators, and every job is covered by a 12-month guarantee. We work on composite doors, timber windows & doors and uPVC windows, and the jobs we see most are rushed sealant from a window installation and cracked internal joints between frame and plaster.
In and around a place like Àird, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain.
Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee.

Your questions about window mastic in Àird
Does the coastal weather in Àird affect outside sealant?
Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. It’s worth checking the walls that face the sea first.
Do you cover smaller places like Àird?
Yes. Àird is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our work covers the whole of Scotland. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Will there be a smell?
Possibly a little. Any smell clears as the sealant cures.
Can you get sealant to suit coloured frames?
Yes, in most cases. Tell us the frame colour when you get in touch and we’ll use the nearest match.
Can you work on commercial sites?
Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages to suit the site.
Will the old sealant be removed?
Yes. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, so we never do it.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. We are fully insured.
Does someone need to be in?
It depends on the job. Inside work needs someone to give us access, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.

Why act early in Àird
Once mastic fails, rain can get between the frame and the wall. Left long enough, it can stain inside walls, spoil plaster and rot wooden frames. Resealing now is a small job by comparison. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.
No two jobs are quite the same, so we quote each one individually. Size, access and the product the joint needs all play a part.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses
Businesses can book us for washrooms, kitchens, offices and more. On commercial sites, working times can be discussed when we quote.
Landlords and agents in Àird can book us as well as householders. Sealant work between tenants keeps a property looking cared for before the next move-in.
Can I do it myself?
Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and doesn’t move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it does not work out, we can still put it right.
What we are called out for in Àird
A lot of older mastic was never designed to stay flexible. Once it’s rigid, every bit of frame movement pulls at it, leaving a hairline gap down one side.
The most common problems we see are:
- Hard, cracked sealant around windows
- Rain getting in at the frame or under the sill
- Sealant in the wrong colour for the frame
- Cracked sealant at the sill ends
Around Àird, as everywhere, window mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

How it works
On the day, there’s very little for you to do. Show us the job and we will take it from there. The job generally takes a few hours for a few frames, or a day or more for a whole house. Somewhere like Àird may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.
- We check each frame and agree which ones need doing.
- The old mastic is cut out and the surfaces cleaned back.
- Deep gaps are filled with backing rod to set the depth.
- We apply a weatherproof sealant to match the frame and tool it neatly.
- Finally we tidy up and check each joint.
How to prepare
- Tell us about any water getting in
- Mention any parking rules near the property
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

Keeping the joints in good condition
No joint lasts for ever, but care makes a real difference. A few tips:
- Avoid blasting the frames with a pressure washer
- Look round the frames every year or so
- Make sure the drainage slots aren’t blocked
- Don’t paint over the silicone
A yearly look round the frames is enough. Cracks and lifting edges are easy to spot early, and if anything looks wrong, just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk.
A small gap around a frame only grows. As the old mastic shrinks further, more air gets through, and heat escapes around the frame. Resealing closes it.
How the job changes by surface
uPVC windows
Fitters’ mastic on plastic frames is sometimes thin and rushed. It comes out, deep gaps get backing rod and the joint is resealed.
Composite doors
Front doors take the weather head on. Those corners get the most care.
Àird homes and the weather
Àird is close to the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on the mastic around window and door frames, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. The west of Scotland is wetter than the east, which means the mastic around window and door frames has to cope with a lot of rain.
For jobs in and around Àird, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.
