Sand mastic in Stor

Sand mastic for homes and businesses in Stor

Sand mastic skins over fairly quickly but full hardening takes longer. Traditional guidance is not to paint over it and we will advise if you are redecorating. We work on stone surrounds, timber door frames and brick reveals, and common reasons people get in touch are a silicone bead on a sash window that spoils the look and failed mastic on an exposed elevation.

In and around a place like Stor, homes range from older stone-built cottages to newer houses. Exposed frames and sills take the full force of wind-driven rain, so the mastic there works hard.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with our work within the year, let us know and we will sort it.

Stor homes and the weather

Stor is close to the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, especially on the side facing the sea. Under the Repairing Standard, private landlords in Scotland have to keep homes wind and watertight, and failed outside joints work against that.

In and around Stor, as anywhere, good sand mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.

Stor (Gaelic: Stoer) is in Highland. We provide sand mastic to homes and businesses in Stor, as part of our work across Highland. Stor is one of 253 towns and villages in Highland we cover for sand mastic.

We also cover Stoer (1 mile south-west), Lochinver (5 miles south-east), An Druim Beag (5 miles north-east), Scourie More (11 miles north-east) and Scourie (12 miles north-east). Island and remote addresses take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

FAQs for Stor

Does living near the coast affect sand mastic in Stor?

Near the sea, outside joints face more wind, rain and salt than they would inland, so the choice of sealant and the preparation matter even more. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.

Do you cover smaller places like Stor?

Yes, Stor is covered. We work across all of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you take out the old sealant first?

Yes. We cut out all the old sealant and clean the joint before resealing.

Can sand mastic be painted?

The usual advice is to leave sand mastic unpainted. If you’re redecorating the window, ask us first and we will talk you through it.

What information do you need?

Only a few details: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. After that, simply send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk.

Is there any odour?

Some sealants have a smell while they cure, which fades as it sets. Ventilation helps.

How long does the job take?

A typical job takes a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints, including the preparation. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

Will it make a mess?

Very little: the area around the joints is protected first, and we clear up the old sealant and our materials before we leave.

What the job involves on each surface

Stone surrounds

Stone surrounds suit sand mastic well. It finishes to look like part of the surround.

Tenement and terrace windows

Rows of sash windows on tenements and terraces often need renewing together. We can do one window or several.

Do you need sand mastic in Stor?

Previous repairs in cement or silicone often trap water or crack away. They do not suit the joint and we normally remove them.

The most common problems we see are:

  • Tired mastic found when preparing windows for paint
  • Draughts and rain around sash boxes
  • Weathered mastic on the most exposed windows
  • Gaps where the frame meets the masonry

For jobs in and around Stor, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

Why it’s worth doing now in Stor

Draughts round a sash window aren’t always the sashes. Open mastic joints round the box can let air in, and renewing the mastic closes them. In an older home around Stor, damp from a failed joint can get into timber and plaster.

Instead of a standard rate, we price the job in front of us: how many joints, what’s in them now and how we reach them. The price is agreed before we begin.

What we can’t put right

  • Sash cords, weights and draught-proofing of the sashes

How the visit works

Once we’re on site, we compare the joints with what we discussed. If we find something unexpected, we talk it through with you first. Most jobs then take anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on how many windows. In smaller Scottish places, parking is normally less of an issue than access and distance. Tell us how to find the property and how to reach the work, and the visit is planned around that.

  1. First, we look at the surrounds with you and agree what needs doing.
  2. Old, loose mastic is raked out and the joint cleaned.
  3. Deep voids are packed so the mastic is the right thickness.
  4. Sand mastic is mixed and applied by hand, then shaped to the joint.
  5. We dress the surface so it sits neatly against the masonry.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about earlier repairs to the joints
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Plan for the work area to be out of bounds to pets and children

Advice

How we quote for sand mastic

Jobs vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • Whether old sealant or filler has to be cut out
  • The number of rooms or windows
  • The size of the job
  • Whether there’s mould to deal with

The cost reflects the work involved, not a rough estimate. That is why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

What to tell us for a quote

A few details help us give you an accurate quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Photos by email, if that’s easy
  • Roughly how big the job is
  • What’s wrong with the joints now

A good description makes for an accurate quote. Tell us where the job is, what’s wrong and how much there is, and add photos by email if you can.

Can I do it myself?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and getting the depth right matters as much as the look.

If you’re set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
