Need sand mastic in Hindhead?

Questions from Hindhead

I let a flat near Haslemere station. Can you help?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email with the address and what needs doing, and we will give you a clear price.

Can you do sand mastic in Hindhead?

Yes. Our work covers London and the South East, and Hindhead is part of that. You can ring 0345 464 0079 or send us an email and let us know what needs doing, and we’ll give you a clear price.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes. Sealing over old sealant is the main reason resealing fails early, so we never do it.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Only a few details: where it is, what you’ve noticed and how we reach it. Then call 0345 464 0079 or email us.

Is sand mastic better than silicone for my windows?

We’ll talk it through with you. Period homes often look best with sand mastic and newer frames suit modern sealant.

Can old silicone round a sash window be swapped for sand mastic?

Often, yes. With the silicone removed and the joint cleaned we point it with sand mastic.

Should I check with the council before work on a listed or conservation-area home?

It’s best to ask your local planning authority first. Like-for-like sand mastic is often the preferred finish, but they decide.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes. Hotels, offices and other businesses use us and we’re fully insured.

Sand mastic in Hindhead, done properly

Our applicators renew the sand mastic around sash and case windows and doors in stone and brick. Out comes the old, loose mastic, and new mastic is applied and shaped by hand. We work on timber door frames, period & listed homes and brick reveals, and people most often call us about weathered mastic on the most exposed windows and gaps round a timber door in stone or brick.

Around Hindhead, many homes face open ground, so their windows and doors take the full weather. Exposed frames and sills lose their mastic sooner than sheltered ones.

Can I do it myself?

If you’ve already had a go yourself, that is fine. We remove it and do the joint properly, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. Silicone does not stick to old silicone, so it peels away and traps moisture behind it. All the old material has to come out first.

Leave it or put it right?

If you’re redecorating, renew the mastic first. Painting over failed mastic does not seal it, and the new mastic is traditionally left unpainted. In a small place like Hindhead, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

The cost depends on how much there is to do, how much old material has to come out and access to the work. We give a clear quote before work begins, so you know where you stand.

What we can’t put right

  • Sash cords, weights and draught-proofing of the sashes
  • Decayed frames that need repair
  • Masonry that needs repairing

What we do, step by step

We bring everything the job needs with us. After a quick look at the joints together, the area is protected and the work begins. It normally takes a few hours for a single window, longer for several. Somewhere like Hindhead needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. We bring what the job needs, so it can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. First we agree which joints need doing.
  2. We remove the old, loose mastic.
  3. We pack any deep voids first.
  4. We apply the mastic by hand and shape it.
  5. The surface is finished to suit the stone or brick.

Getting ready for the visit

What affects the quote in Hindhead

Jobs vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • Access and height
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved
  • The size of the job
  • Any working-time requirements on site

Leaving a failed joint generally makes the job bigger, not smaller. If you’re not sure whether it needs doing, phone 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email and we will give you an honest view and a quote.

What to tell us for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in contact, it helps to mention:

  • What the problem is, such as mould, gaps, leaks or cracking
  • Pictures of the joints, sent by email
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Where the job is, and your postcode

Quotes start with a quick conversation. Tell us what’s wrong, where it is and how much there is, and we’ll explain how we’d tackle it. Whenever you’re ready, call 0345 464 0079 or drop us an email.

Aftercare tips

Joint life depends on how it’s used and looked after. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Do not paint over the new mastic
  • Renew mastic before redecorating the windows
  • Ask a joiner to look at soft timber first
  • Avoid heavy scraping on the mastic joint

Avoid sealing over the mastic with silicone. If anything cracks, get it looked at before trying a quick fix.

It’s best to renew mastic before painting the windows. Painting over failed mastic hides the problem for a while.
