Need sand mastic in Errol?

DIY sealant or a professional job?

A DIY attempt does not rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so just mention it when you contact us.

If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

Sand mastic for homes and businesses in Errol

Sand mastic skins over fairly quickly, but it takes longer to harden fully. Traditionally, sand mastic is left unpainted and we will advise if you are redecorating. Typical jobs include modern sealant on a period surround and cement or filler used on old window joints that has cracked, on brick reveals, timber door frames and period & listed homes.

Many older Scottish homes still have timber windows set into stone walls. Those suit a traditional sand mastic or a neutral-cure sealant, not an acetoxy silicone that can attack some stone.

Big or small, it’s backed by our 12-month guarantee.

Common problems we fix in Errol

Age is the main cause. Even well-laid mastic needs renewing in time and how long it lasts depends on the weather it faces.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Draughty sash windows at the surround
  • Old sand mastic that has cracked, crumbled or fallen out
  • Window mastic to renew ahead of painting
  • Old cement repairs round a window that have failed

For an older house near a landmark such as Errol Parish Church, the joint between an old wall and a newer frame is generally the first place rain gets in.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether you can choose the colour
  • Which sealant they’ll use, and why
  • Who turns up on the day
  • Whether they seal over old material or remove it

Our hiring checklist

How the visit works

Every visit runs the same way: we look at the joints together, mask and protect the surrounding surfaces, do the work and clear up. It usually takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on how many windows. Somewhere like Errol may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We check the window surrounds and agree which joints need renewing.
  2. The loose and crumbling mastic is raked out and the joint cleaned.
  3. We pack any deep gaps so the mastic sits at the right depth.
  4. Sand mastic is mixed and applied by hand, then shaped to the joint.
  5. The finish is dressed so it sits neatly against the stone or brick.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know about stairs, lifts or work at height
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
  • Clear the area around the work

Common questions in Errol

Does the coastal weather in Errol affect outside sealant?

Coastal homes put outside sealant through more weather than inland ones, so preparation and the right sealant matter all the more. Walls facing the sea are usually the first to need attention.

Do you cover Errol for sand mastic?

Yes, Errol is within the area we cover. We work across all of Scotland. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll send you a clear quote.

Can tenants book the work?

We are happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Just make sure your landlord agrees.

Are you an approved applicator?

Yes. We are an ARBOMaster approved applicator, the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants.

How long does the job take?

A typical job takes anything from a few hours to a full day, depending on how many windows, including preparation and clearing up. Your quote will say how long we expect yours to take.

What sealant do you use?

Products from Arbo and Everbuild, among others, chosen to suit the joint. We will tell you what we are using and why.

Is the work guaranteed?

You get our one-year guarantee to all our work.

Do the sealants smell?

There can be a smell while the sealant cures. Opening a window helps.

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple:

  • Keep sills and gutters clear so water drains away
  • Inspect the joints round the windows every year or so
  • Do not run silicone over sand mastic
  • Leave the new mastic unpainted

Do not touch or press the mastic while it hardens. It skins over quickly but needs longer to fully harden.

An open joint round the box lets weather through. The longer it’s left, the more the joint opens.

Windows and doors in Errol

Errol is within about 1 mile of the coast, and homes near the sea take more wind-driven rain, with salt in the air closer to the shore. That is hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, especially on the side facing the sea. Sash and case windows are common in older Scottish homes, often pointed into the wall with traditional sand mastic.

In and around Errol, as anywhere, good sand mastic starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint.
