What sand mastic looks like in Aird Tong
Aird Tong is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind-driven rain is a fact of life and, nearer the shore, so is salt air. Both are hard on the mastic around older windows and doors, which can dry out and crack sooner where a building faces the weather. Aird Tong is in the west of Scotland, which is wetter than the east, which means the mastic around older windows and doors has to cope with a lot of rain.
Whether the job is in Aird Tong itself or nearby, the right material for each joint matters as much as a neat finish. Around Aird Tong, as everywhere, sand mastic is only as good as the preparation behind it.

How we quote for sand mastic
For a quick quote, just ask. What matters most is:
- Any mould that needs treating
- How easy the joints are to reach
- The size of the job
- When we can work, for business premises
Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, any mould to treat, and whether the work is at height. Your quote takes all of that into account.

Aftercare tips
To keep the joints looking good and working properly:
- Ask a joiner to look at soft timber first
- Renew mastic before redecorating the windows
- Avoid patching sand mastic with silicone
- Inspect the joints round the windows every year or so
When preparing windows for paint, take care around the mastic. It can be damaged by heavy scraping.
Gaps round a sash box let in draughts and rain. The longer it’s left, the more the joint opens.
Landlords, agents and businesses in Aird Tong
Failed sealant is one of the commonest items on a check-out report. Several properties can be quoted together.
We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Tell us the address, the job and how access works and we will give you a quote.
Can I do it myself?
If you do try it yourself, take your time over the preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it fails, we can still redo it.
A DIY attempt doesn’t rule out a professional job. We remove it and do the joint properly, so tell us about it when you ask for a quote.

The process
Once we are on site, we check the joints match what you told us. If anything is different, we explain it before carrying on. Most jobs then take a few hours per window, depending on the condition of the joints. For a place like Aird Tong, longer drives are planned in advance. Mention tracks, gates, ferries or anything else about the route.
- We start by checking each surround and agreeing the joints to renew.
- The loose and crumbling mastic is raked out and the joint cleaned.
- Large voids are packed out first, so the mastic isn’t too thick.
- We mix the sand mastic and apply it by hand, shaping it to the joint.
- The finish is dressed so it sits neatly against the stone or brick.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep children and pets away from the work area
