Remedial sealant in Hinton Waldrist

The wrong product in the wrong joint will not last, however tidy it looks. We take it out and use a sealant made for that joint. We work on expansion joints, mouldy bath & shower sealant and leaking tray & enclosure joints, and the jobs we see most are worktop sealant that has shrunk and split and dark patches showing through the sealant.

Somewhere as small as Hinton Waldrist, homes tend to be cottages, farmhouses or converted buildings, with some newer houses too. Movement in older walls and floors tends to show first as cracked grout or split sealant.

All of our work is guaranteed for twelve months, in Hinton Waldrist and everywhere else we cover.

Different surfaces, different methods

Windows & doors

Failed frame mastic is often hard, cracked and in several layers. We remove it all and clean back to sound surfaces.

Leaking trays & enclosures

A cracked tray, failed valve or leaking waste needs a different fix. We say so rather than reseal.

Hinton Waldrist homes and their sealant

Hard water is the norm across most of the South East, which leaves limescale on sealant, grout and fittings, and it has to be cleaned off before new sealant goes in.

Managing a site like Longworth Primary School? Then washroom and kitchen sealant there needs the same care as at home, and schools and businesses are part of our work as well as homes.

Common problems we fix in Hinton Waldrist

Water from somewhere else can ruin a good seal. A leaking valve, a failed waste or cracked grout feeds water behind the bead, and the sealant lifts or goes mouldy from underneath.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Sealant applied over old sealant that has lifted
  • Caulk or the wrong sealant used in a wet area
  • Beads that never stuck properly
  • Dark patches showing through the sealant

Homes close to Church of St Margaret include some older properties, and timber floors under older bathrooms flex, so joints need a sealant that moves with them.

Aftercare tips

Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Never seal over old silicone
  • Act on a lifting corner right away
  • Keep the room well ventilated
  • Keep an eye on the ceiling below the bathroom

Don’t let anyone seal over it later. New silicone doesn’t bond to old, so the old bead should always come out first.

Leaks through failed sealant grow over time. Every shower or downpour sends more water through, into floors, walls or ceilings. Sorting it early limits the damage.

DIY versus a professional finish

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: remove every trace of old sealant, clean and dry the joint, and follow the product’s cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.

What we do, step by step

We keep the work tidy and contained to the joints we’re treating, so you can carry on as normal. The job generally takes a few hours, depending on how many layers have to come out, and we explain the cure time before we leave. Somewhere as small as Hinton Waldrist, access is often the only tricky part. For outside work, also let us know about exposed walls and any outbuildings involved.

  1. Surrounding tiles, trays and frames are protected first.
  2. Every layer of failed sealant is stripped out.
  3. The joint is degreased and checked for movement and leaks.
  4. Once dry, a suitable sealant is applied and tooled.
  5. We give you the cure time and explain what caused the failure.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any water getting in
  • Move anything stored near the joints
  • For business premises, tell us about site rules or sign-in
