Your questions about remedial sealant in Gretna
Do you cover smaller places like Gretna?
Yes, we do. Our work covers the whole of Scotland, from towns to the smallest places. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Do you take on hotel work around Gretna?
Yes. Hotel and guest-house work is part of what we do. Jobs can be programmed room by room, with out-of-hours working possible to arrange.
What if resealing won’t fix my leak?
We will tell you. If it’s a cracked tray, a failed valve or a leaking waste, resealing will not fix it, so we won’t pretend it will.
What sealant do you use?
It depends on the joint: sanitary silicone where it gets wet, and sealants suited to movement or weather elsewhere. Brands we use include Arbo and Everbuild.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on where the joints are. For work indoors, someone needs to let us in, while outside work can sometimes be arranged differently.
Does remedial work come with a guarantee?
Yes. Every job comes with our one-year guarantee.
Do you remove the old sealant?
Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before resealing.
Can I do it myself?
You can, for simple jobs. Preparation is everything: all the old sealant out, and a clean, dry joint. We can always put it right if it fails.
Remedial sealant for homes and businesses in Gretna
In Gretna, as anywhere, remedial jobs tend to look alike: sealant over sealant, mould under the bead, leaks that come back and movement joints that have split. Each is stripped back and done again properly. Typical jobs include over-sealed joints coming away and black mould underneath the bead, on shrunken worktop sealant, expansion joints and botched or over-sealed joints.
For a place like Gretna, the job is the same as anywhere: old material out, joints cleaned and dried, and a fresh, even finish. We just plan the journey and access beforehand.
Our work is backed for twelve months, and the guarantee is the same wherever you are.

Bathrooms and kitchens in Gretna
Gretna is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Scottish Water supplies are generally soft, so limescale is less of a problem than in hard-water areas. Mould is another matter: a bathroom that stays damp still turns sealant and grout black.
Letting a property close to Gretna Green station? Then botched sealant from a previous quick fix is easier to strip out between tenants. For an older house near a landmark such as St Andrew's Church of Scotland, walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first.

What happens if it’s left?
Spraying mould remover on a sealed-over joint doesn’t reach what’s underneath. Removal is the only way to get at it, so the joint can be treated and resealed. When the nearest tradesperson is a drive away, it’s tempting to leave a small leak, but water through a failed joint keeps working away until it’s fixed.
There are no prices on our website, because the cost depends so much on the job itself. For a quick quote, please send an email to info@mrmastic.co.uk and we will talk you through it.

What else we do in Gretna
What happens on the day
You do not need to clear the whole room or building, just the space around the work. We protect the rest, and the work takes a few hours, depending on how many layers have to come out for a typical job. Outdoor work around Gretna depends on the weather, as sealant needs a dry surface, so an outdoor job can move if the forecast changes. Indoor work goes ahead whatever the weather.
- The failure is looked at first, so we know whether it’s sealant, movement or water from elsewhere.
- Each layer is cut out and the residue cleaned off.
- We treat any mould and dry the joint thoroughly.
- We reseal with a product suited to the joint, backed where needed.
- The joint is tooled and you are told about anything else we found.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us about any water getting in
- For indoor joints, keep the area dry beforehand if you can

How to look after the new joints
Once the sealant has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Find out why the sealant failed first
- Keep the room well ventilated
- Check trays and worktops do not move
- Never seal over old silicone
Where we have pointed out another fault, have it put right, or the new joint may fail again.
Mould under a second layer of sealant keeps growing out of sight. By the time it shows through, the joint is well past saving.
DIY sealant or a professional job?
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
The biggest DIY mistake is sealing over old sealant. New silicone will not bond to old, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. Everything old must be removed first.
Surface by surface
Worktops & kitchens
Shrunken worktop sealant leaves a gap that lets water into the back edge. It’s cut out, degreased and resealed in a colour to suit.
Leaking trays & enclosures
A shower that leaks after resealing often has a tray that moves or an enclosure sealed on the wrong side. We check both before any new sealant goes on.
