How we handle regrouting in Knock

Regrouting is normally paired with resealing. Grout belongs between tiles, but internal corners and edges flex, so they’re sealed with silicone rather than grout. Renewing both together means nothing is left half-done. We work on wet rooms, bathroom floors and shower walls, and people most often call us about grout that stays dark however much it’s cleaned and greasy, stained grout behind the hob.

Across smaller places in Scotland, homes range from stone and harled cottages to newer houses. Older buildings can move a little, and that shows first in cracked grout and split sealant.

Every job is covered by our 12-month guarantee, wherever you are in Na h-Eileanan Siar.

Why deal with it now?

Regrouting will not help where tiles have come away. We point that out first so you know what’s involved. On sound tiles, regrouting avoids the upheaval of a retile. Out of town in Scotland, exposed walls take a lot of weather, and once water gets behind a failed joint, damp in stone or harled walls is slow to dry out.

The cost reflects the work involved, not guesswork. That is why we ask a few questions first and agree the price before starting.

Different surfaces, different methods

Bathroom floors

Grout on a floor is walked on as well as wetted. It gets worn and dirty.

Kitchen splashbacks

The grout by the hob and sink takes most of the mess. We renew the grout and the worktop sealant.

What regrouting looks like in Knock

Knock is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the coast, holiday lets and guest houses can see bathrooms used by one guest after another, which wears sealant and grout out faster than in a quiet home. Work on the islands has to be planned around ferry crossings and the weather, so the more notice, the better.

In and around Knock, as anywhere, good regrouting starts with a clean, dry, properly prepared joint. For jobs in and around Knock, choosing the right material for each joint is as important as a tidy finish.

FAQs for Knock

Will you come out to Knock?

Yes, we do. We work across all of Scotland, islands included, from towns to the smallest places. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can you do regrouting in Knock?

Yes. We work across all of Scotland, and Knock is part of that. Just drop us a line at info@mrmastic.co.uk with a few details of the job, and we’ll give you a clear price.

When can I use the shower again?

It varies with the products and the room. We’ll tell you exactly how long at the end of the visit.

Can new sealant go over the old?

No, because it fails. We remove every bit of old sealant first.

What do you put in the joint?

We choose the sealant for the joint, not the other way round. Movement, water and weather all affect the choice.

Do you reseal at the same time?

We normally do. Fresh grout next to old, mouldy silicone would look odd and could still leak.

Are you insured?

Yes, we’re fully insured for every job we do.

Will the old sealant be removed?

Yes. All of the old material is cut out and the joint cleaned before resealing.

Work for landlords, hotels and businesses

For anyone letting property in or around Knock, jobs at different addresses can go on one quote. Send us the addresses and the work at each.

Whether it’s one flat or a portfolio, the work is the same standard: old sealant fully removed, joints prepared properly and a 12-month guarantee.

What we do, step by step

At the end, we look at the finished work together and tell you how long to leave it. The visit itself usually takes a few hours, or longer for a fully tiled room, depending on how much there is to do. Somewhere like Knock may be a longer drive, and the journey is planned ahead. Tell us about tracks, gates, a ferry crossing or anything unusual about getting there.

  1. We check the tiles are sound and flag any that are loose or hollow.
  2. The old grout comes out to a consistent depth, without damaging the tiles.
  3. Dust and debris are vacuumed out of every joint.
  4. New grout is worked into the joints and cleaned off the tile faces.
  5. Corners and edges are resealed with flexible silicone, not grout.

What affects the cost of regrouting

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether the work is at height
  • When we can work, for business premises
  • Which sealant suits the joint
  • How many rooms, windows or areas are involved

Some things make a job bigger or smaller: the old material and how easily it comes out, whether mould needs treating, and whether the work is at height. We take all of that into account in your quote.

What we need to know

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you ask for a quote, tell us:

  • A few photos by email, if you can
  • If it’s domestic, commercial or a hotel
  • Any previous sealing or DIY work
  • The rough size of the job

There’s no standard price list, as no two jobs are quite the same. Instead, we send you a clear quote for your job. To get started, email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk.

What sealant work cannot fix

New sealant can’t fix everything, and we will tell you before we start. It won’t solve:

  • Tiles that have come away from the wall
  • Failed tanking or waterproofing under the tiles
  • A floor or wall that keeps moving

Not sure which it is? You can email us at info@mrmastic.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Joints and surfaces we work on

  • Tiled floors
  • Wet rooms
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Bathroom floors
  • Shower walls
  • Bathroom wall tiles

Can I do it myself?

Overfilling a joint is a classic DIY mistake. A thick, smeared bead looks untidy and does not move well, and the joint depth matters as much as the finish.

Some sealant jobs are within reach of a careful DIYer, like a short, easy-to-reach joint indoors. Where it goes wrong is sealing over the old bead, working on a wet joint or overloading the gap.
